KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Mechanical and technical experience working with compressors or similar industrial equipment is required; however, specialized training on breathing air systems will be provided.
  • Proven ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of equipment, with a willingness to support both complex technical projects and routine, repetitive maintenance tasks with equal attention and care.
  • Hands-on experience with system components such as dryers, tanks, filters, motors, and PLC controls is an asset.
  • Comfortable working independently in the field or collaboratively in-house, handling service, repairs, and warranty work across a variety of fire service and breathing air equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and a detail-oriented approach to technical troubleshooting, equipment inspections, and maintenance planning.
  • Experience with quoting repair work, estimating installation costs, and providing technical support to customers and internal sales teams.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with a commitment to building strong relationships through professional, responsive support.
  • Organized and proactive—able to manage a service schedule, maintain accurate records, and ensure the service vehicle is stocked and compliant with company standards.
  • A strong focus on health and safety practices, regulatory compliance, and maintaining certifications.
  • Must hold a valid Ontario G-class driver’s license and be able to operate and maintain a mobile service vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS

HVAC, industrial mechanic, millwright, electrician, or other related trade is preferred (certification preferred), or a combination of 5+ years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial equipment, specifically working with compressed air systems. Relevant education and experience will also be considered such as trade school and relevant diplomas. High school or equivalent GED required.
Demonstrated use of various tools (manual and powered) and be able to diagnose issues with equipment. Proficient with technology – using a laptop for email, computerized diagnostic tools, internet-based research, and form completion.
Ability to travel (Ontario) up to 50% of the time, with the other 50% out of our head office in Vaughan, Ontario. Valid Ontario G driver’s license and eligibility to drive company vehicles (clean driver abstract). Additional licenses and certificates (forklift operator, DZ license, Red Seal Programs) would be considered an asset. Able to travel to the US on occasion for training is also required. Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Travel is required, in Ontario, is required 50% of the time. Incumbent must have valid provincial driver’s license and maintain “approved” driver status and/or a clean driving abstract to AJS satisfaction. Must maintain company vehicles, that are equipped with GPS, according to established schedule and policies. Must be able to travel to other locations in Canada and the US (passport required) for required training.
Exceptional customer service and communication skills are required to build and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and stakeholders. Adaptability, flexibility, and a proactive approach to continuous learning are also crucial to success in this role.
This position will operate out of a service vehicle, in field service environment in customer locations, in designated areas (generally a firehall/garage) as well as in our service department in Vaughan, Ontario.
When travelling, may be required to stay on location for multiple days, staying in hotels/motels.
The role involves periods of sitting, standing, and walking, as well as occasional lifting of at least 50 pounds. Physical tasks, such as handling tools, reaching, kneeling, and crouching, are required.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Service Manager, you’ll play a vital role in installing, maintaining, and repairing critical life safety equipment for fire departments across Ontario - primarily with breathing air compressors and fill stations. This role also involves supporting our sales and procurement teams on municipal projects, offering technical expertise during site visits and helping scope installation and service solutions.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, diagnose, repair, and maintain breathing air compressors, fill stations, dryers, and storage systems, including performing annual service and air quality testing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, and PLC-related issues in compressed air systems and components.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance procedures on compressors and associated equipment, ensuring compliance with manufacturer standards.
  • Support technical aspects of municipal procurement processes, including site visits, system recommendations, and installation pricing.
  • Service and repair SCBA and related components, ensuring flow testing and quality control to manufacturer specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair a variety of specialized fire service equipment, including digital/propane training props, control panels, gas detectors, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and electronic systems.
  • Perform in-field and in-house repairs, including warranty work, based on customer-reported issues.
  • Maintain accurate service records, equipment history, and documentation using the ERP system.
  • Operate a fully stocked service vehicle and ensure inventory accuracy and tool maintenance.
  • Stay current with technical updates, certifications, and safety standards relevant to all supported equipment.
