JOB DESCRIPTION

AECOM is actively seeking a Signal Systems Engineer to join our World Class Rail Team in our Boston, MA office. The candidate shall use their experience in the design and implementation of the following train control systems to include: Communication Based Train Control (CBTC), Positive Train Control (PTC), Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Solid State Interlocking (SSI), Cab Signaling, Digital Tack Circuit Systems and conventional block signaling systems. This candidate will support transit and rail projects, including the design, implementation, and modification of train control and signaling systems. This position requires expertise in signal engineering, systems integration, and safety-critical applications for freight and or passenger rail operations. The selected candidate will work with engineering teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure the successful deployment of signaling solutions in compliance with industry regulations and safety standards.
The role involves analyzing, designing, and commissioning fixed-block and automatic block signaling systems, with an emphasis on track circuit integration, interlocking logic, and grade crossing automation. The candidate will also assist in reviewing and modifying vital logic software for system enhancements.
The selected candidate will work with internal design teams and client personnel to develop functional and detailed designs for new and existing signal systems, ensuring safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field plus 6 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • 5 years in rail transit signaling and train control systems
  • Knowledge and experience with track circuit requirements and their role in train control and signal operation
  • Experience with automatic block signal systems, including their design and implementation
  • Understanding and experience of approach, time, and route locking principles in railway signaling

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • 10 years of experience in transit or freight rail signaling and train control projects
  • Understanding and experience of approach, time, and route locking principles in railway signaling
  • Experience and familiarity with cab and interlocking signal operation, including their interface with track circuits
  • Experience and ability to work with safety-critical signaling systems, including the design and validation of signal indications and control logic
  • Experience working with Vital Logic Software (VLS) or Vital Harmon Logic Controllers (VHLC)
  • Experience with Relay Based Interlockings
  • Experience with Computer Based Interlockings and/or Solid State Interlockings
  • Proficiency and experience in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent design tools
  • Experience in modifying, testing, and commissioning railway signal control software
  • Prior experience with onboard train control systems and speed code generation
  • Knowledge of CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) and integration with fixed-block systems
  • Experience working in a Brownfield environment with Signaling and Train Control upgrades
  • Experience with Control Center workstation requirements definition and upgrade of Control Center supervision systems together with the Signaling and Train Control System upgrade
  • Experience in grade crossing warning systems and their automation
  • Experience with automatic block signaling and interlocking systems
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or INCOSE CSEP/ESEP is a plus
Responsibilities

  • Coordination of project designs with other disciplines including attendance at project meetings
