About the job
Senior Site Reliability Engineer
Location: Dublin, IrelandWorking Model: Hybrid – typically at least 1 day per week in the Dublin officeEmployment Type: PermanentTeam: Platform Engineering
About the RoleMerative is going through an exciting period of transformation as we modernise and evolve Micromedex, a mission-critical healthcare product used by approximately 3,000 customers globally.
As part of this transformation, we are building a new Platform Engineering capability and bringing Site Reliability Engineering expertise in-house. Historically, much of this capability has been delivered through an external operations partner. This role will be instrumental in helping us establish and mature our internal SRE and platform engineering practices.
We are looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer who can operate at the intersection of software engineering, application performance, cloud and infrastructure. This is not a traditional infrastructure or operations role. You will work closely with engineering and architecture teams to improve the reliability, scalability and performance of our applications, while helping to shape modern delivery, observability and operational practices.
You will have the opportunity to influence how this capability develops from the ground up, working on a highly available global healthcare platform while contributing to a broader technology transformation.
What You'll DoYou will take a hands-on role in improving the reliability, scalability and performance of the Micromedex platform.
- Key responsibilities will include:Help establish and mature Site Reliability Engineering practices within the new Platform Engineering function.
- Work closely with software engineering, architecture, DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve application reliability and performance.
- Act as the bridge between application engineering and infrastructure, helping teams understand and address non-functional requirements.
- Drive improvements in performance, scalability, reliability and operational excellence.
- Design and influence cloud solutions with a strong focus on reliability and scalability.
- Develop and improve modern CI/CD and deployment pipelines.
- Strengthen observability, monitoring, logging and alerting practices.
- Help define and mature service-level objectives and indicators, moving beyond high-level availability monitoring towards service-level reliability insights.
- Lead and contribute to non-functional testing, performance testing and reliability initiatives.
- Troubleshoot complex production and application issues and drive problems through to resolution.
- Work with engineering teams to establish better development, testing and operational patterns.
- Help establish reusable deployment patterns, automation and runbooks.
- Ensure performance and reliability considerations are well understood and documented before solutions are moved into production.
- Work closely with our external operations partner while transitioning greater ownership and expertise into the internal organisation.
- Contribute to architectural improvements and initiatives across areas such as session management, data/application architecture, APIs and new protocols.
- Identify problems, investigate deeply and take ownership through to delivery rather than simply handing issues to another team.
- Contribute to the organisation's evolving approach to AI, including considering how AI can be used safely within engineering and operational environments.
- The Technology EnvironmentOur current environment includes:Microsoft Azure
- Java-based applications
- DB2
- Oracle
- Jenkins
- Ansible and scripting
- Monitoring, logging and observability tooling including Grafana
- Highly available, multi-region cloud architecture
- The platform currently operates across three Azure regions with a triple-active database architecture, providing a technically challenging and highly available environment. Our technology landscape is continuing to evolve, with increased adoption of:Cloud technologies
- Open-source technologies
- Open-source databases
- Modern deployment and delivery pipelines
- Improved observability and reliability practices
Specific database experience is less important than having a strong understanding of database performance, scalability and reliability.
What We're Looking ForWe are particularly interested in engineers who bring a strong application and software engineering mindset alongside their SRE, cloud or platform experience.
- You may have started your career in:Software Engineering
- Application Development
- Platform Engineering
- DevOps
- Site Reliability Engineering
- and developed a particular interest in:Application performance
- Reliability engineering
- Scalability
- Cloud architecture
- Troubleshooting
- Non-functional testing
- Automation
- Operational excellence
You should be comfortable understanding how an application behaves, not simply how the underlying infrastructure is configured.
- You'll BringStrong experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience working with applications and application development teams.
- Strong understanding of application reliability, performance and scalability.
- Experience troubleshooting complex technical and production issues.
- Experience with cloud environments, ideally Azure.
- Experience designing or contributing to reliable, scalable cloud solutions.
- Experience with CI/CD and modern delivery practices.
- Understanding of observability, monitoring, logging and alerting.
- Experience with non-functional, performance or scalability testing.
- Good understanding of databases and database scalability.
- Strong problem-solving ability and a willingness to investigate and learn where you don't already have the answer.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both software engineers and infrastructure/platform teams.
- Ability to influence technical decisions and work collaboratively across multiple teams.
- A hands-on approach — you will be expected to get into the detail and help solve problems rather than operate solely at a theoretical or architectural level.
- Experience in Regulated or Critical EnvironmentsExperience within healthcare would be highly valued, particularly given the mission-critical nature of Micromedex. We are also interested in people who have worked within other regulated or highly controlled environments, including areas such as:Financial services
- Healthcare technology
- Enterprise SaaS
- Critical software platforms
Experience working within environments where reliability, availability, security and operational discipline are particularly important will be valuable.
What Would Make You Successful? You will be someone who enjoys solving complex problems and taking ownership. You don't need to know every technology in our environment on day one. What matters is that you can understand complex systems, identify problems, investigate them deeply and find a way forward.
- You'll be particularly successful if you can:Move comfortably between application and infrastructure conversations.
- Understand the impact of application design on reliability and performance.
- Challenge existing approaches and identify opportunities to improve them.
- Translate reliability requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Work collaboratively with developers while still understanding the operational environment.
- Take ownership of initiatives from identifying a problem through to implementing and embedding the solution.
- Balance strategic thinking with hands-on technical delivery.
Why Join? This is an opportunity to join at a significant point in the evolution of Micromedex and Merative's wider engineering organisation.
- You'll have the opportunity to:Help build a new SRE and Platform Engineering capability from the ground up.
- Play a key role in bringing expertise and ownership in-house.
- Influence platform, architecture, reliability and engineering practices.
- Work on a mission-critical healthcare product used globally.
- Solve complex challenges around performance, scalability and high availability.
- Work within a highly available multi-region Azure environment.
- Help modernise delivery pipelines, observability and operational practices.
- Work alongside a growing Dublin-based engineering team.
- Contribute to new product and platform initiatives, including APIs and emerging technologies.
- Be involved in the organisation's evolving AI strategy and engineering initiatives.
- Have a role that combines strategic influence with genuine hands-on technical problem solving.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to do more than maintain an existing environment, you'll help shape how a modern Platform Engineering and SRE capability operates.
