SUMMARY

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Education: Have a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to

The purpose of the Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) Program is to avoid the unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among Veterans by ensuring that eligible justice-involved Veterans have timely access to VHA mental health and substance abuse treatment services when clinically indicated, and other VA services and benefits as appropriate. VJO Senior Social Workers are responsible for direct outreach, assessment, and case management for justice-involved Veterans in local courts and jails, and function as a liaison with local justice system partners.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify high-risk, justice involved Veterans and provide short-term, goal directed case management services.
  • Act as a liaison between justice system partners and VA systems, to include access to VHA care for eligible Veterans.
  • Coordinate community resources and community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs and community agency programs.
  • Assist the local criminal justice system with helping Veterans engage VASLCHCS for needed services upon re-entry into the community.
  • Provide outreach and education to inform and assist the Veteran, legal defenders, judges, VA clinical staff, and other VJO Coordinators of the benefits and limitation of care with VJO.
  • Assess high risk factors, acuity, and the need for services, providing the ability to serve Veterans who tend to have frequent and severe crises, lack family or an adequate community support network, be poor at self monitoring, frequently fail to comply with instructions and treatment, or have significant deficits in coping skills and require continuing professional psychosocial support.
  • Conduct justice-related staff development programs for facility staff and provide opportunities for staff to update professional knowledge and practice skills.
  • Provide mental health assessments, treatment planning and referrals to VA and community services.
  • Provide consultation services to other staff regarding the psychosocial needs of justice-involved Veterans and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to the treatment plan.
  • Make recommendations on program policy and procedures based upon work experience to supervisor and assist in developing associated documents.
  • Transporting Veterans in government vehicles in support of meeting the goals identified in the individual treatment plan.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
