Senior Software Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to work on a project in the fashion industry.

You will be part of a distributed team developing new technologies to solve real business problems. Our client is a leading premium fashion and lifestyle omnichannel retailer, with a long heritage and a strong digital commerce presence alongside its physical stores. The organisation is actively accelerating its digital capabilities to enhance customer experience and retail operations at scale, making technology a core driver of business growth

You’ll work in an XP / Agile setup (pairing/mobbing, continuous refactoring, frequent releases) with full lifecycle responsibility. Teams operate with full-stack ownership (no separate QA department) and a “you build it, you run it” mindset, actively avoiding knowledge silos through collaboration, rotation, and documentation

We are looking for someone with good communication skills, ideally with experience making decisions, being proactive, used to building software from scratch, and with good attention to detail.

What you will do:

• Design, build and evolve high-quality backend services primarily using Kotlin, while also working with Java, within a Kubernetes-based microservice ecosystem.
• Deliver end-to-end full-stack features, contributing confidently to frontend development using Vue.js or React.
• Work within Self-Contained Systems to deliver independently deployable services and full-stack features.
• Design and implement integrations using HTTP-based APIs/feeds and Kafka Streams, ensuring reliable and scalable communication between systems.
• Participate in architecture and technical design discussions, proposing pragmatic solutions aligned with product and platform goals.
• Take ownership of quality across the full SDLC, including automated testing, CI/CD and production readiness.
• Collaborate across QA, DevOps, Infrastructure and Product, bringing a T-shaped approach to engineering.
• Support operational excellence through monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of services in AWS/Kubernetes production environments

What you will bring:

• 8+ years of professional software development experience, or equivalent senior-level expertise.
• Strong full-stack engineering experience with a clear backend focus.
• Strong hands-on Kotlin experience – this is a key requirement and the primary backend language.
• Solid professional Java experience and strong knowledge of the JVM ecosystem.
• Good professional experience with Vue.js or React, with the ability to contribute independently to frontend development.
• Strong experience with microservices, distributed systems and HTTP-based APIs.
• Experience with Kafka; Kafka Streams experience is a plus.
• Experience deploying and running applications in Kubernetes and AWS environments.
• Working knowledge of MongoDB and PostgreSQL, or comparable NoSQL/SQL databases.
• A T-shaped mindset, with strong backend expertise and the ability to work effectively across frontend, QA, DevOps and Infrastructure.
• Strong communication skills and a proactive, detail-oriented approach.

Nice to have:

• Event-driven or message-based systems beyond core Kafka usage.
• UX design background or strong UX intuition.
• Flutter app development.
• Frontend performance optimization (bundle size, Core Web Vitals, perceived speed).
• Experience with security / compliance in e-commerce contexts.
