JOB DESCRIPTION – SENIOR SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST – ADULT SERVICES

Role Senior Speech & Language Therapist (Young Adults Team)
Duration of Post Permanent Full time (35 hours per week)
Part-time roles will also be considered
Location Adults Services Young Adult Team North Dublin
The team will have an office initially in St Mary’s Hospital in the
Phoenix Park. The base may move to another location within Dublin
North City and County. Access to appropriate transport is necessary
to fulfil the requirements of the role.
Reporting Relationship Speech & Language Therapy Manager / Clinical Director of HSCP
Job Purpose To provide an evidence-based person-centred speech and language
therapy service as part of a multi- disciplinary team to young adults
between the age of 17.5 and 29.5 years across various day services in
North Dublin. This incorporates the provision of dysphagia
management and the provision of supports for communication skills,
using a variety of approaches. The post holder will work in
conjunction with members of the multidisciplinary young adult team
to enhance the quality of life of the people within the Young Adult
Team service.
Scope of the Role The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within a
multidisciplinary young adult team, providing quality speech and
language therapy services to young adults with a disability including
autism and intellectual disability.
The brief of the post will be working with young adults with
disabilities who are attending day services in North Dublin, but
flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the service. The post
holder will work across several day service locations and conduct
home visits, when necessary.
The Young Adults MDT will work collaboratively with the person,
their families and day service providers to support full participation,
belonging, relationships, inclusion and self–determination for people
with disabilities.
The Team aspires to provide brief episodic intervention and support
to individuals in the context of their existing support networks with a
view to promoting the individual’s well-being in line with the
principles of the HSE New Directions approach to supporting adults
with disability.
The role involves person centered speech and language therapy
service including dysphagia service and communication assessments
and intervention working collaboratively with the person, staff and
family members.

Key Duties and Clinical Duties
Responsibilities • Manage a caseload of young adults across a variety of day
service locations throughout North Dublin and carry out

home visits as necessary.

  • Provide a quality speech & language therapy service to the

people we support through assessment, diagnosis and

management of communication and dysphagia.

  • Monitor, audit and evaluate communication and dysphagia

care plans and interventions.

  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement work that may

include project work, research, evaluation, audit, in-service
training, service development and evaluation of resources
within the young adult team and wider speech and language

therapy department.

  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to

ensure integrated care.

  • Represent the department / profession / team at meetings

and conferences as designated by the SLT Manager or Clinical

director of HSCP.

  • Consult with the people we support and their families/key

workers regarding assessment, treatment and education as

appropriate.

  • Participate in the development of clinical protocols and

guidelines reflective of evidence-based practice.

  • Manage and prioritise clinical and non-clinical caseloads

appropriate to the post.

  • Become familiar with and work in accordance with relevant

HSE policies, HIQA standards, New Directions, legislation and
professional policies, guidelines and requirements to ensure

safe practice and high standards of service delivery.

  • Promote a culture that values equality, diversity and respect

in the workplace.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of

procedures, policies and guidelines for the SLT and YAT team

while adhering to existing standards and protocols.

  • Supervision of Basic Grade SLTs and student SLTs as

appropriate.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

  • Lead and participate in young adult team and Speech and
    Language Therapy Department in-service trainings and team
    meetings.

  • Engage in the education of colleagues, student SLTs, other

health care professionals and the people we support.

  • Take responsibility for keeping up to date with current

Speech and language therapy practice and participating with

CPD relevant to clinical role.

  • Engage with personal development planning and actively

participate in induction, clinical supervision, mentoring and

reflective practice.

  • Attend mandatory training programmes as directed by

Stewarts Care or Speech and Language Therapy Manager.

  • Abide by the Speech and Language Therapy Registration

Board Code of Conduct and Ethics as set out by CORU.

Administrative

  • Keep up to date and accurate speech and language therapy

records, reports and statistics as required / advised by

Speech and Language Therapy Manager

  • Ensure that confidentiality is always maintained.

Health & Safety

  • Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional

practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant

legislation, regulations and standards.

  • Assist in the development, implementation and review of the

department’s Health and Safety statement, as appropriate.

  • Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards

and accidents and bring them to the attention of the relevant

person(s).

  • Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the

safety of self and others.

  • Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take

appropriate action.

  • Comply with department procedures with regard to

assessment, recommendation and / or manufacturing of all

assistive devices.

colleagues, MDT, the people we support & their carers so

Qualifications & Candidates must meet the following criteria relevant to the role:

Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Clinical Speech and Language Studies

from the University of Dublin or equivalent qualification.
Professional Qualifications received outside the Republic of
Ireland including the U.K must be validated by the Validation

unit of CORU prior to commencement of employment.

  • Registered with CORU as a Speech and Language Therapist,

state registration number on application.

  • Membership or eligibility for membership of the Irish

Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT).

  • Minimum of three years satisfactory post qualification

experience

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of the ability to achieve results through effective

collaboration in a complex environment.

  • Hold a full driving licence and have full time access to a car.

Terms and Conditions of Employment
Senior Speech and Language Therapist
Remuneration • Salary and qualifications are in
accordance with Department of Health
consolidated pay scales. Salary Scale is
Senior Speech and Language Therapist:

€63,279-€74,509 per annum.

  • Your salary is paid monthly (16th unless

when 16th falls on Saturday or Sunday
you are paid on the Friday prior to the
16th) by direct credit transfer into any
Bank or Building Society of your choice
where the paypath system operates.
Annual leave • 29 Days per annum
Working week • The hours allocated to this post are 35
hours per week with a 7-hour standard

working day, exclusive of lunch breaks.

  • The allocation of these hours will be at

the discretion of the Director of Clinical
Services and in accordance with the
needs of the service.
Probation • All employees will be subject to a
probationary period of 6 months, with
an extension if required to 9 months.
This probationary period applies to all
employees irrespective of their role or
type of role.
Garda Vetting • Stewarts Care will carry out Garda
vetting on all new employees. An
employee will not take up employment
with the organisation until the Garda
Vetting process has been completed
and the organisation is satisfied that
such an appointment does not pose a
risk to the service users and employees.
