About the job At Skylight, software engineers design, implement, and maintain software systems to improve government services for users. This software is built to meet the needs of regular users of government services as well as Skylight’s partners in government. We’re looking for an Engineer with full stack experience to join us in supporting the Administration for Children and Families (ACF). You’ll work in close collaboration with Skylight and ACF staff during an exciting time of growth for ACF’s Digital Services team, including executing on signature products and AI-enablement, as well as technical consulting and capacity building. What you’ll do Engineer software products as part of a cross-functional team, which includes user experience researchers and designers, product managers, data scientists, engineers, and other functional specialists Achieve technical excellence by advocating for and adhering to lean-agile engineering principles and practices such as API-first design, simple design, continuous integration, version control, and automated testing Select and use the right tools, frameworks, languages, and technologies for the job, with a preference for open-source solutions Analyze systems to identify technical debt, instability, unreliability, and other opportunities for improvement, as well as design, document, and communicate solutions What we're looking for Minimum qualifications Experience building modern web applications using React, Vue, or Svelte, applying component-driven design principles Experience building back end data systems using Python, .Net, Java, or Ruby Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS, and component-based UI architecture. Experience integrating with backend APIs (REST or GraphQL) and enterprise-wide tools. Exposure to cloud environments such as AWS (e.g., S3 hosting, CloudFront, API Gateway). Demonstrated experience with event-driven and service-based architectures. Demonstrated ability to design and implement data-intensive, interactive UIs (e.g., filters, tag management, dashboards) that help users make sense of complex information Familiarity with integrating AI- or ML-driven features such as search, text tagging, summarization, or clustering outputs. Experience connecting to Python-based backends and collaborating closely with backend teams to deliver cohesive, end-to-end user experiences Understanding of state management, asynchronous data fetching, and API integration patterns Ability to contribute to application build and deployment pipelines (e.g., CI/CD, AWS Amplify, or similar) Comfort designing and implementing human-in-the-loop workflows (e.g., reviewing, assigning, or tracking tasks and comments) Can produce high-quality code by adhering to good practices such as automated testing Ability to write clean, working, and reusable code Familiar with how to build secure, compliant software and defend against common vulnerabilities Possess a foundational understanding of data engineering, including how to use various datastores to handle persistent data in software systems Understand the different pieces of software systems and how to fit them together, while keeping performance, reliability, and availability in mind Understand the importance of always putting users at the center of your work, including thinking through the impact and implications of any code that you write Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment (e.g., can communicate effectively with clients) Passionate about creating better public outcomes through great government services A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values Ability to travel for work from time to time Nice-to-have qualifications Experience using AWS hosting and build services such as CloudFront, S3, Amplify, or Cognito Familiarity with data visualization frameworks (e.g., D3.js, Plotly, Chart.js) Comfort designing and building natural language user interfaces, such as search, tagging, or text-annotation tools that make complex data more accessible to users Experience contributing to accessibility-first or government digital service projects, ensuring inclusive, compliant, and user-centered design Understanding of performance optimization through continuous delivery and continuous optimization, helping applications run efficiently and reliably in production environments Understanding of role-based authentication and identity management principles.
