ABOUT US

Our purpose is simple: to save lives at sea. 24 hours a day, every day, RNLI lifesavers are ready to launch to the rescue. There is an opportunity at The Mumbles Lifeboat Station for a Senior Station Technician to join the team. This would suit someone whose mechanical expertise, resilience, leadership, and management skills are just as strong as their ability to keep The Mumbles Lifeboat in perfect operational order.

Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE

As a Senior Station Technician, most of your time will be utilised ensuring that our Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat, D Class Inshore Lifeboat and associated equipment work to the highest order, ensuring that the Lifeboat Station is well managed, and assist training volunteer crew members - so that when a service call does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.
You will not be the sole individual working on the lifeboat and its equipment. You will also lead and work alongside out team of mechanic volunteers at the station and our wider technical support staff to ensure the equipment is maintained to the required standards.
The role of Senior Station Technician is focused for those individuals with an NVQ L4/SVQ L5 in an engineering discipline, a time served engineering apprenticeship, or sound background and experience in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering. If these qualifications or experience are not held then suitable individuals may be offered a Station Technician role in lieu (please see Job Profile for Level 3 attached).

Your role will include:

  • Inspiring and motivating your team; supporting their development, conducting shore-based training, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge.
  • Meeting and talking to the public about your station’s work.
  • Taking a lead on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environment issues, helping to develop a positive culture within the station.
  • Spending time in the day to day running of the Lifeboat Station; this may be in the form of answering e-mails, ensuring records are maintained and working with the Operations Team.

To be considered for the role of Senior Station Technician at The Mumbles Lifeboat Station you will need:

  • Knowledge and experience working with diesel engines, as well as DC electrical, hydraulic, and electronic control systems. An engineering background and mindset is essential.
  • Experience of fulfilling or the ability to train towards a Lifeboat Mechanic role or equivalent, with the capacity and willingness to develop skills in other areas of seagoing duties.
  • To demonstrate leadership and management qualities, and the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential
