Job Summary
The Senior Systems Engineer will play a key role in the design, integration, and certification of Weather Observation Systems that support aviation community in Canada from coast to coast. The role combines technical systems engineering expertise with product ownership responsibilities, ensuring our weather reporting solutions meet compliance, reliability and performance standards. Success in this position requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.

Key Accountabilities:
- Fulfill the role of product owner, managing priorities and backlogs of weather observation systems.
- Define and manage acceptance criteria to ensure compliance with aviation standards and organizational objectives.
- Lead the efforts of development and maintenance of system documentation: requirements specifications, interface control documents (ICDs) and system design descriptions (SDDs).
- Support and participate in certification activities.
- Perform requirements analysis and system integration, ensuring that stakeholder needs are clearly translated into technical solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address system challenges, identify risks, and ensure seamless delivery.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to team members, promoting best practices in systems engineering and documentation.
- Represent the team in technical reviews, audits, and engagements with stakeholders.
Job Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree Engineering (Aerospace, Communications, Computer Systems, Electrical/Electronics, Software)
- Professional Certification: Member or eligible to be a member in a Professional Engineering Association in Canada.
Experience:
- Minimum 8 years work experience in systems engineering, ideally with exposure to aviation, weather systems, or other regulated industries.
- Demonstrated experience acting as a product owner or a technical lead, including backlog management.
- Experience working within an agile development environment and contributing to iterative product delivery cycles.
- Hands-on involvement in system testing, integration, and regulatory certification.
- Proven track record in authoring, maintaining and managing technical documentation.
Knowledge:
- A thorough Knowledge of systems engineering principles (requirements management, traceability, system integration, and verification).
- Knowledge of system documentation standards (SDD, ICDs, test procedures) and configuration management practices.
- knowledge of agile methodologies and their application within systems development lifecycles.
- knowledge of risk management, hazard analysis and safety assurance practices.
- knowledge of test methodologies, including unit, integration, system and acceptance testing.
- A good working knowledge of NAV CANADA travel, procurement, and project development processes.
- A good working knowledge of the NAV CANADA organizational structure and responsibilities.
Abilities:
- Ability to translate complex stakeholder requirements into clear, actionable engineering solutions.
- Ability to lead and facilitate cross-functional collaboration, ensuring alignment across engineering and operational teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to write technical specifications, standards, statements of work and other engineering documents.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize technical information, research best practices and emerging technologies, and develop strategic recommendations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, working under pressure, and meeting tight or conflicting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to present technical information clearly and persuasively in reviews, audits, and certification settings.

Working conditions:
- Primary work location is Ottawa is at the Technical Systems Centre, Hunt Club Road. Position classified hybrid and requires minimum of Three day on site.
- This position requires occasional travel across the country.
