About This Opportunity This role supports the Queensland Brain Institute’s visionary and collaborative research environment by delivering high‑level technical expertise across advanced manufacturing, precision machining and design. Working within a purpose‑driven workshop team on the St Lucia campus, the Senior Technical Officer provides consultative, design and hands‑on support to researchers, academics and students, enabling world‑class neuroscience discovery through operational excellence and innovative technical solutions. Key responsibilities will include: Machining a wide variety of extremely complex and/or repetitive components using CNC and high‑level precision machining equipment. Designing, manufacturing, installing and commissioning research and teaching equipment, from concept through to delivery, using drawings, CAD models and verbal briefs. Creating complex 3D CAD designs for proposals and producing full detail manufacturing drawings, including support for CNC and CAM workflows. Providing workshop operational support, technical advice and consultative design services across diverse teaching and research projects, while ensuring high standards of quality, safety and client service. This is a full‑time, continuing position at HEW Level 6. About You You will bring a strong technical foundation, curiosity and a collaborative mindset, along with: A degree, diploma or higher engineering trade qualification, with at least 4-5 years subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Extensive experience in CAD/CAM, CNC machining and/or high‑level precision machining in a workshop or research environment. Demonstrated ability to design and produce advanced 3D components, including using FDM and SLA printing techniques. Proven capability in maintaining and repairing precision equipment and supporting workshop operations as required. High‑level communication and consulting skills, with the confidence to work with academics, researchers, students and commercial clients from diverse backgrounds. Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements and a commitment to sustainable work practices. The ability to manage multiple complex projects with minimal supervision and contribute technical leadership to fellow technicians and project teams. Interested?
