Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future. Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer, which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence. Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security. We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Technical Specialist – Systems Integration & Architecture in Canberra to work on Defence projects. What You’ll Do This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including: Lead Defence integration architecture activities, overseeing solutions across strategic, operational, and deployed networks while ensuring alignment with DIE standards and secure operating frameworks Provide authoritative SME guidance on legacy and operational Defence systems, supporting incident management, interoperability, and continuity across tactical, strategic, and coalition environments. Represent Australia in coalition forums, including PEGASUS CWAN planning teams, ensuring national requirements are reflected in multinational network design and enhancement decisions. Drive transition and capability uplift, providing technical leadership for migrations, new service integration, interoperability assurance, and compliance with DSC Design Standards. Develop, review, and maintain DSC Design Standards, ensuring they clearly guide ICT delivery organisations and align with security, facility, interoperability, and operational requirements while engaging senior Defence and international stakeholders. What You’ll Bring Demonstrated expertise at SFIA SINT Level 5, with proven leadership delivering integration architecture across classified Defence environments and lifecycle gates. Extensive knowledge of Defence networks, including strategic, deployed, legacy, and coalition systems, supported by experience in military communications planning and sustainment Strong technical leadership across complex programs, including representation in multinational or coalition technical forums and influencing diverse Defence stakeholders. Deep understanding of Defence capability lifecycle, governance, ITIL service management, and hands‑on experience with systems such as SATCOM, tactical radios, radar integration, DWAN, DTCN, and PEGASUS. Competence across SFIA SINT Level 5 domains, including integration architecture, complex problem resolution, governance and assurance, stakeholder influence, and operational awareness of military communications. Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 2 or higher Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
