(Senior) Technical Support Engineer, Failure Analysis
Technical Services is a globally recognised technical knowledge centre within Wärtsilä. Our primary mission is to offer comprehensive technical support to both internal and external stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of Wärtsilä’s products and solutions. We are committed to maintaining, developing, and ensuring the availability of technical knowledge and expertise efficiently.
We are now looking for a Technical Support Engineer, Failure Analysis to join our Investigation Laboratory in Turku, Finland as a Technical Support Engineer; Senior Technical Support Engineer; or Technical Expert. Responsibilities

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

As a Technical Support Engineer in the Investigation Laboratory, you will be responsible for supporting large bore engine component investigations, which are significant part of Root Cause Analyses (RCA) made by Technical Services. You would be producing metallurgical samples and measurement records, while playing an active role in delivering failure investigations directly to various stakeholders. You will also maintain and develop the laboratory environment and research equipment. The position requires good overall knowledge of technical measurements, troubleshooting skills, a genuine interest in engines, and a problem-solving mindset.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Supporting failure investigations of engine components returned from the field, including documenting and photographing the received parts.
  • Dismantling assemblies and cutting large pieces to sample size.
  • Preparing metallographic samples.
  • Performing and reporting failure analysis related technical measurements and inspections.
  • Handling internal logistics and warehousing.
  • Performing destructive and non-destructive examinations of components.
  • Maintaining contact with external laboratories that provide testing methods not available in-house.
  • Actively participating in the maintenance and development of the laboratory, along with the research equipment, measuring devices, and tools.
  • Keeping the laboratory premises safe, ensuring an optimised work environment.

THE FOLLOWING WILL ENABLE YOU TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE:

  • BSc in Engineering, preferably with a specialisation in Mechanical or Materials Engineering, or a similar educational background with qualifications gained through work experience.
  • Overall knowledge of materials, including manufacturing processes, heat treatments, surface treatments, properties, usability, applications, and failure analyses.
  • Familiarity with material testing, mechanical testing, and research methods, including both destructive and non-destructive techniques.
  • Knowledge of 4-stroke engines and experience in diesel engine design or field work is beneficial.
  • A technical mindset with a knack for technical analysis and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • A team-player approach and strong communication skills.
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to work effectively in a global team.
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken. Finnish or Swedish language skills are advantageous.
  • A service-oriented approach with a drive to provide the best possible service experience for our internal and external customers.
