Northern Stage is the North East’s largest producing theatre. We operate a multi-venue building in Newcastle, running our own productions and receiving touring shows at varying scales. As such, we can offer a wealth of exciting opportunities and experiences to our staff, through working on diverse, interesting and multifaceted theatre. Northern Stage is a charity, and any profit generated from commercial activity is directly invested into our charitable programmes, serving communities and artists across the region. This Senior Technician role will work closely with the Technical and Production Team to deliver a range of projects including Northern Stage’s own productions and co-productions, visiting company productions, and a range of commercial and hire events. The role will be responsible for focusing on the sound and AV aspects of visiting company and hire needs, and our own productions and co-productions in support of the Technical Manager. This role will also include the organisation and operation of equipment and venue maintenance. Northern Stage champions the Carbon Literacy Project and Theatre Green Book; our Senior Technician will actively look for solutions to support the technical department and Northern stage be greener in production. Northern Stage is dedicated to the development of backstage skills locally and runs various activities to support this. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver support to our Participation Department during these activities, including speaking directly to participants about their role and skills. Due to the nature of the industry, working hours will be flexible and will include evening and weekend work.
Key Responsibilities:
A Work with creative teams and other members of the Technical Team to realise technical requirements of productions within allocated resources
B Attend technical rehearsals, plot and operate technical equipment safely and competently as needed to realise the artistic vision of productions
C Assist in the co-ordination, fit up and operation of Northern Stage productions being toured or transferred to other venues
D Provide excellent customer service and technical support to visiting companies and hires, assisting with technical requirements, and advising where required
E Deputise for the Technical Manager as needed, and support the administration of the department
F Provide a high level of skill in the day-to-day operations of the technical team
G Plan and undertake maintenance on production equipment
H Devise and deliver of training/learning programmes for the Technical Department
I Task manage and supervise casual and freelance personnel
J Duty Management

Person Spec Essential

  • Knowledge and experience of contemporary theatre practice and working effectively within the theatre production process.
  • Evidenced track record as a professional sound technician.
  • Knowledge of radio microphone technology, and the theory and legal issues relating to it.
  • Knowledge of audio theory, including acoustics and human perception of sound in a theatrical context.
  • Extensive experience of the use of digital sound desks, preferably Yamaha.
  • Extensive experience of live mixing for music and theatre.
  • Experience of programming QLab to an advanced level.
  • Experience of drafting system schematics, channel lists and patching.
  • Experience rigging and using projectors.
  • Experience of leading a technical crew on fit ups and get outs.
  • Experience of working with touring show tech specs and riders.
  • Enthusiasm for theatre and music, with a passion for making things sound good.

Desirable

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of sound system design, management and construction.
  • Knowledge of video mapping and the manipulation of audio-visual content.
  • Knowledge of access equipment and systems, such as for assisted listening and audio description.
  • Experience in advanced recording techniques and sound editing.
  • Proficiency in use of cameras in live and recording contexts.
  • Experience of equipment maintenance, including soldering for cabling and PCBs.
  • Experience of flying and rigging theatrical equipment.
  • Experience of OSC/midi/networking
  • Experience of line-by-line mixing for drama and musical theatre.
  • Extensive knowledge of microphone techniques for performers, musical instruments and stage practical’s.
  • Experience of managing and delivering training.
  • Experience of working effectively within budgets.
  • A full driving license
