ABOUT US

Established in 1974, John Charcol is one of the UK’s most experienced and trusted mortgage brokerages. We specialise in providing whole-of-market mortgage advice, with a focus on high-value and complex cases. With a strong emphasis on quality, compliance, and client-first service, we’ve built a reputation for excellence over five decades.
We are now looking for a Senior Training & Competence Supervisor to join our Compliance team in Southampton. This role is crucial to maintaining and enhancing the Training and Competence (T&C) scheme, overseeing the performance and development of our Advisers and Appointed Representatives (ARs), and ensuring full alignment with FCA standards.

Responsibilities

THE ROLE

As the Senior Training & Competence Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing and supporting the application of our T&C scheme. You will ensure all ARs and Advisers operate to the highest regulatory standards, conduct file reviews, facilitate training, and identify development areas to maintain compliance and excellence in service delivery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and embed the T&C scheme, taking responsibility for ensuring that all aspects of the scheme are adhered to
  • Conduct file reviews and observations across all product areas, determining the suitability of the advice given, providing constructive feedback and highlighting areas for development
  • Oversee the training and competence of the firm’s ARs, ensuring adherence to the FCA’s enhanced AR Regime
  • Maintain and update the AR Oversight Policy
  • Identify risks associated with AR oversight and flag these to the Compliance Manager
  • Assist with the compliance elements of AR onboarding and initial risk assessments when required
  • To act as the referral point for advisers on complex files or sensitive issues
  • To identify common trends, themes, and risks across the business in terms of development areas or knowledge gaps through rout cause analysis.
  • To develop, facilitate and deliver T&C training for advisers
  • Develop strong working relationships with relevant stakeholders across the business and any relevant third parties
  • Responsible for continuously proactively identifying opportunities to develop the application of the T&C scheme including annual policy reviews and policy updates.
  • Consistently demonstrate good Conduct Risk behaviours by placing the customer’s best interest at the heart of everything you do and recommend improvements where possible. Contribute through actions and behaviour to ensure the culture of the whole company reflects this
  • Carry out any other duty related to T&C as may reasonably be required
  • Provide support to T&C supervisors and deliver training within the team
  • Oversee all aspects of T&C for each adviser through weekly reviews of competency
