THE OPPORTUNITY
Join us in the Cities, Planning and Design group in the West where you’ll play a crucial role in one of our largest teams outside London. You can be based in Bristol or Cardiff, and you’ll be at the heart of our growth and success, helping us win new business and deliver exciting projects. We’re looking for forward-thinking planners who see transport as a “connector and integral part of the development and placemaking jigsaw” to connect places and improve lives. You’ll help senior leaders enhance client relationships through technical excellence, team building, and linking our wider business.
We need someone who understands transport as a key part of development and placemaking. You’ll work on multi-disciplinary projects, communicate effectively with other specialists, and present complex issues in an easy-to-understand way. This role will help to boost our technical capabilities across the West. Crucially, you will have a client-facing and project-leading role, building team resilience and strengthening relationships for Arup. You’ll interact with colleagues in Bristol, Cardiff, and London, work with a variety of regional and national clients.
This is your chance to lead the development of our Transport and Cities, Planning and Design group, tackling connectivity and mobility challenges, making the case for investment, and driving innovative technology. You’ll lead projects and client relationships locally and nationally, supporting senior staff in growing our business in this region and sector.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience of leading the technical work on some of the following: Business Cases (TAG and/or WelTAG), Local Walking, Cycling and Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs), Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, access strategy work, parking strategies, sustainable transport and active travel provision, and working with guidance such as LTN1/20, NPPF, DfT Transport Assessment guidelines, Manual for Streets.
- Well-developed understanding of the planning process, including the basis for achieving successful submissions in support of planning applications & requirements and implications of multi-modal transport impacts.
- A background in project management (e.g. budget & resource planning, invoicing).
- BSc qualified in relevant submit & chartered status or working towards chartership with a relevant professional institution.
- Knowledge of modelling tools / software and when best to apply them on projects (for example, LinSig, Junctions 10, Podaris, GIS).

You will deliver small to medium scale projects to time and budget, following project management processes (for example managing change, risk, raising early warnings on projects, invoicing). Working within a team of diverse professionals, you will effectively brief team members and manage individual team tasks to support in their development. This will include sharing knowledge and mentoring others within the team, particularly Early Careers Professionals, on your areas of expertise. You will also oversee the development of scheme designs with the wider team (CAD technicians/Design technicians). As a senior member of the team you will also share in developing local relationships within the development market, delivering projects and helping to win work.
