Job Description
AECOM Canada is hiring a Senior Tunnel Design Lead

In your role as Tunnel Design Lead, your primary responsibilities will include

  • Lead and carry out the planning, design, and analyses of tunnel and trenchless projects of medium/high complexity in the water and transportation sectors.
  • Carry out analyses and design for projects in regions of high seismicity
  • Design of both TBM and SEM (Sequential Excavation Methods) tunnels
  • Design of support of excavation systems for shafts, cut and cover tunnels, and station boxes.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams and contribute specific geotechnical and structural expertise on underground projects.
  • Coordinate and manage detailed phases of engineering work for an assigned portion of a major project or the total project of moderate scope.
  • Provide technical leadership, oversight, and mentorship to more junior engineers
  • Support and collaborate on pursuits (prepositioning, RFQs, and RFPs) across market sections.
  • Use commercial numerical modelling tools including both Finite and Distinct Elements software (FLAC, PLAXIS, etc)
  • Independently develop numerical modelling and structural verification of underground elements (reinforced concrete, bolts, shotcrete, etc)
  • Autonomously generate and verify excel sheets for structural and geotechnical verifications various underground structures and tunnels
  • Participate and inputs to constructability reviews, risk management plans, value engineering sessions, QA/QC comments
  • Contribute to preparation of contract documents, technical specifications, design report and drawing

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (civil, structural, construction, geotechnical, etc.) + 10 years of relevant experience in tunnel or underground projects, with increasing leadership roles.
  • Experience in leading projects and teams
  • P.Eng or ability to obtain P.Eng within 18 months
  • Clear knowledge and expertise of the basic principles of soil and rock mechanics, ground-structure interactions, and structural engineering.


    • Experience of TBM and conventionally mined tunnels

    • Experience in the design of pre-cast concrete segmental tunnel linings

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 12+ years of experience in designing tunnels and/or underground structures including leading tunnelling teams
    • Professional licensure (PE) in the US is an advantage
    • Experience in both traditional (design-bid-build) and alternative delivery (design-build, progressive DB, alliancing etc…) contracting methods
    • Thorough understanding of construction methodologies common in underground construction.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills applied to design activities
    • Excellent oral and written skills as well as interpersonal/teamwork skills
    • Ability to liaise with other disciplines, professionals, clients
    • A combination of Canadian and international experience
