Responsibilities:
We have an opportunity for a Sr. Underwriter, Specialty Accident to join our Berkley Accident and Health team! You will be responsible for the Specialty Accident underwriting results for the Midwest/Western region, including new business production, account retention, underwriting margin and book profitability targets. Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Directly accountable for the Specialty Accident underwriting results for the Midwest/Western region, including new business production, account retention, underwriting margin and book profitability targets
  • Exhibit and maintain high standards for underwriting, including risk selection, pricing performance, and account documentation
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting best practices and guidelines, ensuring they are implemented appropriately and consistently across the book of business
  • Partner with Regional Sales Manager to:
  • Develop new distribution relationships in the Midwe3st/Western region
  • Develop and execute regional territory plan in order to establish and meet sales and underwriting goals
  • Manage workflow between underwriting and distribution to meet service level expectations, market expectations and brand promise
  • Deliver best-in-market service to our distribution partners without sacrificing profitability
  • Provide insight into continued development of automated and integrated underwriting administrative platform
  • Partner with operations/systems to develop and implement process and service improvement plans
  • Develop knowledge of and comfort with the full suite of A&H products, able to represent them all in your marketplace
  • Work on special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of Accident & Health (A&H) underwriting experience: any mix within the participant accident, corporate accident (business travel accident), intercollegiate sports (student accident) preferred
  • An analytical mind. You love to dive into the details of an account in order to craft pricing and coverage that meet underwriting guidelines, profitability models and customer needs
  • Incredible empathy and understanding of the needs of our customers, both insureds and their agents alike; you will be an excellent, pro-active advocate for Berkley A&H customers and are passionate about their brand experience
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; your communication style is flexible to the situation; you communicate clearly and with a purpose
  • Calm under pressure; you have excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks
  • You have a strong sense of accountability, fun and adventure
  • A strong customer service bias; you want to get to yes; you are known for your super responsiveness; you can say no and preserve your relationships
  • Natural curiosity; you love learning how things work and you are always looking for innovative improvements
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products and policy management and underwriting systems
