Description:

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Pharmacy (SOP) is currently seeking a Senior Web Content Specialist for the Office of Communication and Marketing team within the Dean’s Administration. The Senior Web Content Specialist will manage content for the School of Pharmacy’s public website (www.pharmacy.umaryland.edu) and affiliate websites, including the News Center, Inside SOP blog, and the School’s section of the campus Elm website. This person provides strategic oversight of the School’s online brand and web presences, implements content in the CMS, and conducts day-to-day management of web content, including curation and generation of new content that promotes the School’s mission and values. Content management tasks include performing regular updates across the site, improving website accessibility, and working with departments, centers, programs, and the School’s 80+ faculty members to ensure that content is accurate and appropriate. The position also serves as the primary writer for the School’s online News Center, writing and publishing stories about School events, grants, contracts, initiatives, academics, research, and practice programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of best practices for web writing and editing, knowledge of writing content specifically for the web.
  • Expertise in using the web for brand management and development.
  • Ability to create specialized graphics and images.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using content management systems to edit and develop new content, experience using Terminal 4 preferred.
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 web accessibility standards is a plus.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of WordPress content management system, including use of themes, plug-ins to achieve communication and marketing goals.
  • Proficiency with HTML to support posting content on various content management systems.
  • Ability to adhere to university policies and guidelines on posting accessible web content.
  • Strong grammar and editing skills, with ability to write in a variety of styles for multiple audiences, and evaluate copy for clarity, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Ability to translate complicated scientific and health care topics into lay language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Associated Press Style writing/editing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills – ability to work with people of all professional levels.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a team to ensure timeliness and accuracy of web content on an ongoing basis.

    HIRING RANGE: $67,000 - $74,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)

Responsibilities:

  • Create, develop, and control content for Internet-based applications to meet the needs of the School’s web brand to communicate internally and externally.
  • Write content for the School’s website, including feature stories, blog posts, and other content for the homepage and interior pages.
  • Work with School faculty on the creation and maintenance of faculty profile websites and department, center, and program pages.
  • Maintain the information architecture of the website.
  • Develop a review schedule to ensure departments, programs, centers, and faculty profile content on the School’s website is current.
  • Identify and implement web content strategies to improve internal and external communications. Create and implement templates for new websites and pages for School events, programs, and initiatives.
  • Acts as an editor in gathering, writing, and organizing information for the web, including current and future informational materials. This may include: individual meetings with members of the School community, monitoring communications within the School, acting as a central point of contact for web content and special projects.
  • Manage web-based initiatives requiring technical assistance, including special website design initiatives, development of specialized graphics/images for use on the web and special event web sites and RSVP forms.
  • Coordinate with the School’s administration, instructional technology staff, web development staff, and campus communications staff on design implementation and accessibility of the School’s websites.
  • Design custom site analytics reporting for departments, centers, programs, and faculty.
  • May perform administrative responsibilities, such as assisting with events.
  • Be cross-trained on marketing and communications platforms such as social media and Constant Contact to provide coverage and ongoing communications when fellow team members are absent.
    Qualifications
    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, computer science, communications, marketing, journalism, business administration, or closely related field. Bachelor’s in English preferred.
    EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of experience in communications, journalism, technical writing, marketing, or web development. Experience in writing for an educational institution or on scientific topics for broad audiences is strongly preferred.
