As a Senior Web Engineer, you will own the full technical lifecycle of complex features and projects, from architecture and implementation to deployment and performance. You'll work alongside talented cross-functional teams, guide less experienced engineers, and help raise the bar across everything we build. Your responsibilities Take ownership of the design and implementation of complex features, plugins, themes, and integrations, from planning to deployment Act as Tech Lead on projects, coordinating development efforts and serving as the go-to technical reference for your team Translate complex client requirements into robust, scalable, and secure technical solutions, proactively identifying risks and edge cases Participate in client meetings and communicate technical concepts, progress, and constraints clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders Conduct thorough code reviews and provide actionable, constructive feedback across all seniority levels Contribute to and lead architecture discussions, refactoring initiatives, and strategic technical decisions Develop and maintain CI/CD workflows, automated tests, and observability practices for robust delivery pipelines Drive adherence to engineering standards: code quality, documentation, test coverage, accessibility, performance, and security Mentor and support other engineers through pairing, code reviews, and informal guidance Collaborate closely with engineers, QA, DevOps, Project Managers, and Designers to ensure timely, high-quality project delivery Optional Must-haves Expert-level proficiency in PHP (5+ years) with deep object-oriented programming mastery — you architect systems and teach principles to others Strong WordPress development expertise: custom plugins, themes, Gutenberg blocks, WP REST API, and complex integrations Real-world Gutenberg / Block Editor experience, including building custom blocks with React Solid JavaScript and React experience, particularly for Block Editor / Gutenberg development Proven ability to mentor other engineers and elevate codebase quality through code reviews and pairing Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (PHPUnit, E2E), and quality standards Confidence working directly with clients, explaining technical decisions and constraints to both technical and non-technical audiences Comfort working across the full stack with no strong bias toward client-side or server-side code English at professional working level, this role requires clear, nuanced communication in client and team contexts Timezone compatible with Central European hours (CET/CEST, or at least 4–5 hours of sustainable daily overlap) Nice-to-haves Experience with WooCommerce, WordPress Multisite, or advanced API integrations (REST, SOAP, GraphQL) Familiarity with TypeScript Working knowledge of Docker and cloud-based deployments Experience with performance optimization, caching strategies, and security hardening Knowledge of PSR specifications and modern PHP ecosystem standards Contributions to open source (WordPress core, plugins, packages, or other projects) Experience with JIRA & Confluence in a professional engineering context Previous experience in a remote-first engineering environment Softskills Technical knowledge Optional What we offer Work from home (we are 100% remote) Flexible working hours Annual hardware budget Exciting global enterprise clients like SAP or PayPal Working at the heart of WordPress as a partner of WordPress VIP and WooCommerce Attend our local team events Visit WordCamps with the chance to hold sessions Multicultural, globally distributed team Lifelong learning and growth with career advancements A dynamic work environment with the encouragement of entrepreneurial thinking and acting A supportive Syde culture that appreciates YOU Become a Syder Have you become curious and are interested in this opportunity?
