The Director, Learning & Development will oversee the learning and development experience for AmeriCorps members that prepares them to serve as idealistic leaders and practitioners focused on strengthening schools and supporting students to improve performance. In this role, the L&D Director builds strategic relationships with district and local partners, works closely with the Impact Department, and manages Impact Analytics and instructional coaching staff members.

Position Overview
City Year Miami is seeking a dynamic Director of Service and Learning that will report directly to the Managing Director of Impact and play a critical role on the Impact leadership team. The Director of Service and Learning leads the Service and Learning team at City Year Miami and is the driver of the AmeriCorps Member journey from confirmation to graduation.
In support of City Year Miami’s Impact goals, the Director of Service and Learning facilitates continuous improvement cycles with staff and corps, plans and implements the site’s learning strategy for corps, and coordinates with the Impact Leadership team in support of staff learning. The Director of Service and Learning will manage an Impact Coach and an AmeriCorps Member (ACM) Experience and Operations Manager, while partnering with all Impact department staff members to define optimal team processes to achieve site goals.
Primary Responsibilities
Create and Implement AmeriCorps Member Learning Plan

In partnership with the Impact Leadership Team, develop a site learning plan in collaboration with City Year Headquarters Learning and Development and the broader Impact Team (IC, L&D, IDs). Lead the planning, execution, resourcing and logistics of learning for the site, including:

  • Develop and oversee the management of a calendar that aligns with site operational and learning priorities as established by the learning team and Impact Directors (IDs) with input/support from Impact Managers (IMs).
  • With site Impact Team, plan and lead execution of Basic Training Academy and other special learning events including Mid-Year Summit and Learning & Development (L&D) Training Days.
  • Observe and coach ACMs in the school environment to ensure they are equipped to meet City Year standards as practitioners of Tier I and Tier 2 interventions (requires travel to Miami schools 2-3 times per month from September – June). The Service & Learning Director would also support Impact Managers in providing such feedback for Corps.
  • Coordinate learning and development for Senior and Second Year ACMs, two cohorts of ACMs returning for a second year of service.
  • Supervise Impact Coach to help create and implement shared learning among AmeriCorps Members and Impact Staff (i.e. Communities of practice).
  • Work with site leaders to ensure adequate time, space and resources to achieve learning goals and reinforce a culture of continuous learning.
  • Oversee AmeriCorps Experience and Operations Manager (LDM) in managing site LACY and Idealist Journey, as well as other ACM membership programs.
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the Miami area who will support the Learning and Development program and provide high quality learning and trainings to our AmeriCorps members.
  • Supervise ACM Experience and Operations Manager in identifying and managing venue relationships.
  • Supervise ACM Experience and Operations Manager in executing training-related logistics, including supply and equipment requirements, event set-up and break-down, contract execution and payments, management of department purchase card, and additional tasks as needed for training days.

Lead Site Continuous Learning

With Impact Team, regularly assess progress against key impact and ACM experience indicators in order to identify successes and opportunities for improvement in learning plan.

  • Ensure key learning from training evaluations are incorporated into future trainings (content, delivery modes, facilitation, logistics, etc.)
  • Seek out, document and share learning best practices.
  • Encourage and lead observation and feedback loop processes for staff and ACMs to offer insights about the team’s effectiveness and support continuous improvement.
  • Seek out resources and trainings aligned to the future direction of City Year Miami as it relates to ACM learning and development and innovations to service implementation.

Drive Content Development and Facilitation

Establish content management process (i.e., creation, publication, version control, access, and content maintenance) that will position City Year Miami staff to lead meaningful training experiences for AmeriCorps Members.

  • Execute high quality learning content development and delivery
  • Ensure adequate resources (i.e., internal and external experts, time, space) to support high quality content development and delivery.
  • Secure and coordinate internal and external content experts as learning designers and facilitators. Includes leading IMs and ICs in content design/facilitation of corps L&D.
  • Customize HQ content and produce locally designed content as needed to meet learning needs.
  • Train and develop staff to lead and facilitate meaningful learning spaces.
  • Support IMs and IC in identifying team-specific learning needs and managing customized learning opportunities.
  • Manage Impact Coach to prepare and coordinate internal and external facilitators.
  • Evaluate L&D program on an on-going basis to ensure that it meets the needs of ACMs, partners, and Program staff.
  • Collaborate with City Year’s national network of L&D professionals to share best practices and continue to develop the L&D program
  • Encourage and lead feedback loop focused on staff development and facilitation of learning and development content to offer insights about the team’s effectiveness and support continuous improvement for future training and development spaces.
  • Serve as primary liaison to Miami-Dade County Public schools regarding services and ACM development, communicating directly with Instructional Supervisors and Curriculum Support Specialists as necessary.

Oversee Coaching of WSWC Implementation

In partnership with Impact Directors, lead Impact Coach and Impact Managers, will ensure high quality implementation of WSWC services and improvement plans and that ACMs are regularly receiving effective feedback and guidance through implementation of Observation and Coaching practice.

  • Lead processes to provide feedback and insight to IMs and learning team on learning needs in the areas of ACM practice with students, leveraging instructional expertise of Impact Coaches throughout the process.
  • Lead and support content design and delivery of training to meet site learning needs for effective academic and socio-emotional learning services
  • Observe IC and IM observation and coaching cycles and provide feedback on coaching support.
  • Reinforce use of data to adjust interventions and improve instructional practice.
  • Facilitate strong collaboration between IDs, IC and IMs.

Support a Meaningful AmeriCorps Member Experience

Create structures and experiences that will result in a positive and fulfilling experience for AmeriCorps Members grounded in service to the students and community of Miami.

  • Lead on the building of community and positive corps culture by setting a theme for the service year and ensuring ongoing community building strategies align with chosen theme.
  • Ensure ACMs feel prepared for service as a result of their trainings, specifically as they head to schools following Basic Training Academy.
  • Create vision and direction for all training spaces that prioritize ACM experience in said spaces.
  • Set expectations for facilitation and team leadership that will result in positive ACM experience, creating structures and processes to support expectations in being met.

Organizational Stewardship

Engage actively as a member of the City Year national network by participating in conference calls, responding to e-mails, and completing other tasks as necessary.

  • Lead on select site and network initiatives.
  • Devote up to ten days a year to corps member recruitment decisions.
  • Assist with MLK Day, Opening Day, Annual Gala and other side-wide designated events.
  • Attend overnight network-wide events including Pro-Serve Conference (a multi-day conference for all City Year Impact leadership often hosted in Boston), and other local and national events.
  • Support external communication by sharing content from Learning and Development spaces for social media.

Additional Qualifications.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Background in education and/or youth development and management, preferably within Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience leading, managing, and training staff or young adults in the education, nonprofit, or corporate sector.
  • City Year/AmeriCorps experience is a plus.
