JOB SUMMARY:

To be the instructor of MATH0900U Prep. Math for Engineers (Sept 2 – Dec 19, 2025) with in person lectures scheduled Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 5:10pm – 6:30pm. MATH0900U course description: A quick review of functions including exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. An introduction to calculus, covering limits and continuity, differentiation rules, applications of differentiation and antiderivatives. An introduction to vectors and linear systems covering dot and cross product, lines and planes and solving linear systems. Other topics as time permits. 3 cr, 3 lec, 1 tut.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred candidates will have a demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate mathematics courses, and a minimum of a Master’s degree in the field of mathematics or Modelling and Computational Science. Preference will be given to candidates that hold a PhD. degree in the area of mathematics or Modelling and Computational Science if accompanied with previous experience teaching mathematics courses.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills
  • Candidates must have expertise in undergraduate-level lecturing and the ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment
  • Strong computer skills, including basics (Windows environment), office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Maple, e-mail.
  • Experience using a Learning Management System (Canvas) would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to teach courses using laptops (or tablets), with a modern software on the student laptops, closely involved in teaching.

Education:

  • Preferably a MSc or PhD in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
  • Alternatively, MSc or PhD in Modelling and Computational Science
  • Certificates of previous teaching are an advantage

EXPERIENCE:

Experience teaching mathematics courses would be considered an asset
Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.

Responsibilities

The duties consist of preparing and delivering in person lectures, developing evaluation materials (assignments, quizzes, exams, etc.), managing the course website (Canvas LMS: posting course materials, student grades, assignments etc.), consultation with students (during and following completion of the course), marking, supervision of teaching assistant(s) (if assigned to give marking assistance), consultation with Faculty regarding course structure and topics etc, submission of grades and feedback to the Dean and Mathematics Undergraduate Program Director (UPD). The instructor will be expected to utilize a technology-enhanced learning approach to deliver course materials which may include online lecturing with a tablet laptop, and is encouraged to use current and innovative teaching techniques.
This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC.
