DESCRIPTION:

This course examines contemporary artificial intelligence from a philosophical perspective. Topics include: the nature of intelligence, comparisons between biological and artificial learning, linguistic understanding and grounding in foundation models, moral guidance for AI systems, and the moral status of artificial agents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in-hand, preferably in philosophy.
  • Prior experience as a course instructor, preferably in Philosophy at U of T.
  • Advanced prior knowledge of the subject-matter of the course and topic-related teaching experience.
  • Related research and a record of research achievement is considered an asset to this position.
    Duties and responsibilities: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.
    Appointment Dates: January 1, 2026 – April 30, 2026
    Note: All positions involve completion of any course grading not already finished by April, 2026.
