Description

The Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP) Counsellor is responsible for providing counselling to children and youth who have been sexually abused in the Elk Valley. Typically, the SAIP counsellor helps by providing psycho-educational services, a space for clients process traumatic events, and where appropriate, helping the family members and caregivers to respond to difficult child/youth behaviours. The SAIP program aims to create a safe and supportive environment for clients to engage in the counselling process, reduce stigma, and develop healthy connections within the client’s life. The counsellor may also provide assessment and treatment for children and their families under 12 years of age who have sexual behaviour problems. Where possible the program offers preventative presentations at schools and community groups in the Elk Valley and South Country.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Relevant Master’s degree (Social Work, Psychology, Child and Youth Care, Counselling Psychology) preferred
· At least 2 years relevant counselling experience.
· Registration with a regulatory body preferred, does not need to be BC based registration.
· Ability to work with families within a client-centred, strength-based approach.
· Emergency first aid with CPR B.
· Vulnerable sector check.
· Reliable vehicle and valid class 5 driver’s licence.

Responsibilities
  • Build safe and supportive environment for clients
  • Undertake intake assessments from a trauma-informed perspective
  • Develop treatment plans
  • Work in collaboration with clients to monitor and evaluate treatment plans
  • Provide individual therapy to children and youth who have been sexually abused, and where appropriate, provide services to their caregivers
  • Utilize a variety of specialized treatment modalities and therapies for clients
  • Approach therapy from a culture-infused perspective
  • Provide crisis intervention services when necessary
  • Complete risk assessments and takes appropriate action in accordance with agency policy, provincial legislation, and professional code of ethics
  • Work collaboratively with clients to develop safety plans
  • Maintain appropriate clinical, client, and administrative records
  • Maintain and manage client waitlist when required
  • Collate statistics and provide reports on service delivery
  • Provide information and promote the program to the public through information sessions and groups
  • Consult/liaise with Columbia Basin Family Resource Society staff as necessary
  • Consult/liaise with Ministry of Children and Family Development staff, community agencies, schools, and hospitals as necessary
