Job Summary: The Shelter Safety and Support Specialist plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for guests of The Hub, our low-barrier overnight shelter. This position supports structure and guest well-being by monitoring common areas during periods of high activity and engagement. The Specialist builds positive relationships with guests while promoting shared responsibility, mutual respect, and a sense of stability within the shelter. All interactions are guided by a trauma-responsive, non-stigmatizing approach that prioritizes dignity. The Specialist promotes a calm and respectful atmosphere that supports the safety and comfort of all guests, staff, and neighbors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Monitor shelter entrances, exits, outdoor spaces, and client storage areas to ensure a safe and orderly environment. * Greet and engage guests, demonstrating a welcoming and non-judgmental approach. * De-escalate conflicts using trauma-informed strategies and intervene when safety concerns arise. * Collaborate with shelter staff to enforce shelter guidelines consistently and fairly. * Conduct regular perimeter and interior safety checks. * Document incidents and safety concerns in accordance with agency policy. * Provide support and assistance to guests as needed, while collaborating with shelter staff to ensure appropriate linkage to on-site resources. * Maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, and community partners to promote trust and collaboration to support smooth operations. * Assist in emergency situations, including evacuations or medical crises, following established procedures. * Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures * Other duties as assigned. Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: * High school diploma or equivalent * Prior experience in shelter, residential, outreach, or safety monitoring settings strongly preferred. * Commitment to harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and low-barrier models. * Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. * Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations. * Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting. * Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: * Ability to walk and stand for extended periods. * Ability to perform job duties in varying weather conditions, year-round. * Must occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds. Rotation (1 week) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday 5pm-10pm (2nd week) Monday, Tuesday, Sunday 5pm-10pm
