Description

Domestic Abuse Services Oxford (DASO) are leaders in providing effective, efficient and accountable services for women and their children who have been impacted by gender-based violence in Oxford County.
DASO is a residential shelter operating 24 hours, 7 days a week. Relief hours of work are mainly on a call-in basis and require flexible availability including the ability to work last minute on a variety of shifts; during the weekday, weekends, statutory holidays, days, afternoons and overnight. There is potential for some scheduled shifts. Shift premium’s available for afternoon and night shifts.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary functions of the Shelter Staff: Residential Program Worker include, but are not limited to:

Client Focus:

  • Provide support through the 24-hour crisis/information line via telephone and texting, via in person walk-ins, and to residents of the shelter, including emotional support, referrals, information, and safety planning.
  • Complete risk assessments and safety plans to ensure ongoing service user risk management.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation.
  • Complete assessments, intakes, discharges, and provide information regarding the shelter to service users.
  • Facilitate goal identification, planning, and achievement with service users.
  • To advocate and refer service users to community partners for support services based on identified goals.
  • Assist with systems navigation.
  • Ensure effective communication with Manager of Shelter Operations/management team and collaborate effectively with the staff team as a whole.
  • Positively represent, interact and converse consistently with service users, community partners, funders, donors, and stakeholders.

Operations:

  • Assess and triage the needs of each service user.
  • Assess shelter admissions and discharges with support from Manager of Shelter Operations.
  • Identifying/recognizing with the Manager of Shelter Operations opportunities for on-going training as needed.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory training, committee, and staff meetings, as well as coaching for professional growth and development.
  • Adhere to all agency Policies and Procedures.
  • Act as a positive role model for service users.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Diploma in Social Service Work, or Assaulted Women’s and Children’s Counsellor/Advocate Diploma
  • Registered Social Worker or Registered Social Service Worker is an asset
  • Work experience in a community-based organization serving vulnerable and marginalized populations, including violence against women and children, homelessness, and housing sectors
  • Assessment, triaging, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and basic counselling skills
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, addictions, mental health, and trauma[1]and-violence informed care
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Knowledge of community resources, programs, and services
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with community partners/agencies
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive framework
  • Ability to engage in critical reflection on practice
  • ASSIST or equivalent training
  • Training in Mental Health First Aid and B-SAFER is an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of legislation and standards relevant to the agency’s mandate
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Experience in a 24/7 residential support operation is an asset
