Join Beacon Community Services as an Out of the Rain Shelter Worker and play a key role in creating a safe, supportive overnight environment for youth experiencing homelessness. In this temporary role, you will provide compassionate, client-centred support during awake overnight shifts, helping to ensure the well-being, safety, and comfort of shelter participants. Working as part of a dedicated team, you will assist with nightly operations, offer a welcoming presence, and connect youth to valuable community resources. Days/Hours of Work: Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8:00pm -8:00am AWAKE OVERNIGHTS

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Homelessness Prevention and the Youth Shelter, the Out of the Rain Shelter Worker joins a multi-faceted team working in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Beacon Community Services that make a difference in people’s lives every day. The shelter worker uses a compassionate approach when connecting with youth who are homeless and is responsible for the nightly safety and support of the youth who attend the shelter.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPEREINCE

  • 1 year of experience working with homelessness and marginalized groups of individuals in a direct support role
  • First Aid Certification
  • Food Safe certificate
  • Naloxone training

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Understanding of issues related to mental health needs and addictions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to respect all clients and treat them with dignity
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to use sound judgement while working in demanding conditions and circumstances
Responsibilities
  • To ensure a safe space for the youth by adhering to the safety protocols, policies and procedures of Beacon Community Services and Out of the Rain.
  • To intake and orient youth to the shelter.
  • Use a client centered approach to support and advocate for participants.
  • Attend to all activities related to the nightly running of the shelter, inclusive of administering first aid and naloxone, cleaning and meal service.
  • Be familiar with, build and maintain positive relationships with appropriate community resources.
  • Perform other relevant job duties as assigned.
