Description Job Title: Shift Operations Supervisor Departments: Operations Reports To: Production Manager _____________________________________________________________________________________ Main Function: Primarily oversees the production, quality, safety, and personnel functions for the designated production team/shift. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Maintains safe work areas by demonstrating safe work practices and behaviors, complying with all applicable safety requirements/procedures, identifying/correcting any safety hazards, and ensuring all employees do the same. 2. Meets periodically with direct reports to ensure that any issues (equipment problems, people issues, raw materials, product issues, quality issues, safety, etc.) are addressed promptly and priorities are clear. 3. Is ultimately responsible for the quality of all parts/products that are produced during the shift. Documents and counsels employees for errors made. Informs all necessary parties of quality issues, including but not limited to the Plant Manager, other Operations Managers, QA/QC Manager, Vice President of Operations and Quality, etc. 4. Drives and directs the personnel to achieve the highest level of production efficiencies while maintaining our quality and safety standards. 5. Assists in the department(s) as needed to help with workload; this will include performing hands-on production tasks, operating equipment, filling in for Coordinators and/or Team Leaders in their absence, etc. (It is to be understood that managing the departments/employees will not require 40 hours of the supervisor’s time each week; the remainder of the supervisor’s time should be devoted to working hands-on directly with department/employees in any production activities.) 6. Maintains production logs, sets and monitors production rates, and devises visual aids, where applicable, to assure quality. Maintains accurate records and documentation of what has been produced for traceability purposes. 7. Assures that all paperwork and reporting is completed accurately and on the same day the work is done. 8. Maintains a system of accurate documents (such as spec sheets, SOPs, etc.) to be used in the manufacturing process. 9. Supervises employees: a. Maintains records of each employee's attendance (including vacation, sick time, time off without pay, overtime, etc.). Reviews timecards for accuracy and approves and submits them in a timely manner to Payroll for processing. b. Assists employees with questions or problems they have regarding work assignments, priorities, safety, personnel issues, etc. c. Coaches and develops staff and fosters a team atmosphere. Separates friendship from business. Asserts oneself rather than taking a passive approach to addressing issues. d. Counsels employees when necessary and recommends to Management such personnel actions as disciplinary action, transfer, termination of employment, etc. Documents any issues, counseling efforts, etc. e. Evaluates employees using the Company's performance appraisal system. f. Oversees training and orientation of new employees and offers additional training as needed. Offers re-training when necessary. Sets up and maintains cross-training between the Coordinators, Team Leaders, and/or staff. 10. Becomes fully trained and competent on the respective equipment and maintains such competency. 11. Ensures all preventive maintenance is performed on all equipment, regardless of whether it is performed by the equipment operator or Maintenance staff. 12. Uses a pallet jack to move product as needed. 13. Secures the Company’s physical property by ensuring that all doors leading outside the plant are locked, and all unnecessary lights or equipment are turned off at an appropriate time, should the Company have a need to shut down. 14. Takes a role in all chemical spills, first aid/medical incidents, and emergency situations by maintaining employee safety and making sure the proper Company resources are employed effectively. Documents all such incidents and informs the proper parties. 15. Respectfully communicates necessary updates to coworkers and leadership. Provides daily updates to the Plant Manager regarding departments’ activities, human resources needs, absences, shortages, safety issues, etc. 16. Participates in lean activities, including but not limited to: a. Lean training and lean events such as kaizen or a 5-day event. b. 5-S program in department or other areas assigned. c. DMAICs. Continuously looks for ways to improve both the department’s and own individual efficiencies and time management, as well as ways to improve any aspect of the Company’s operations, and develops and implements DMAICs accordingly. d. Encourages staff to participate in all of the above. 17. Conducts staff meetings as necessary. 18. Conducts oneself professionally and leads by example. Maintains confidentiality of company information and personnel information. When in doubt, does not share information until has asked whether it is appropriate to do so. 19. Makes sure Coordinators and/or Team Leaders lead by example (come in on time, follow SOPs, observe company policies, handle people issues properly, treat everyone equally and with respect, etc.) because they are a reflection of the Manager him/herself. Addresses issues as soon as they arise. 20. Complies with all Company policies (i.e., personnel, safety, etc.). 21. Performs other duties as assigned. (Such duties may or may not be essential functions of the job.) Schedule & Hours: 12 Hour Shifts (6:30 pm - 6:45 am). 82 hours bi-weekly. Working every other weekend. Must be available to train on the day shift. Requirements Qualifications/Job Requirements: • College education preferred • Minimum of 1 to 5 years of supervisory experience, manufacturing setting preferred • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Good mechanical aptitude and equipment operating skills • Good computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel with the ability to learn and use company business software • Able to transport up to 50 pounds and handle a loaded pallet jack • Able to wear a chemical cartridge respirator and train to administer first aid/CPR Environmental Factors & Mental/Physical Demands: Primarily works indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. Requires prolonged sitting at a desk using a computer, standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, bending, and transporting up to 50 pounds. Walks to and from other departments throughout the company, printers and fax machines, meetings, restrooms, etc. May, on occasion, drive to and attend an off-site meeting or training seminar or pick up items locally for a company-sponsored event.
