POSITION SUMMARY:

The Manager Marine Operations (Ship Manager) position drives an ongoing and productive relationship between the shoreside Marine Operations organization and the senior Marine Management team onboard their assigned vessels The Manager Marine Operations is not only responsible for the safe compliant and efficient operation of their assigned vessels but also has major responsibilities to encourage innovative means of meeting and exceeding the company’s stated goals and objectives This position is result-driven thinks strategically keeps the “big picture” in mind and interacts frequently on an interdepartmental basis both shipboard and shoreside A successful Manager Marine Operations will not only have exceeded their individual goals but will also have actively supported a group of vessels that have consistently surpassed their assigned targets

QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited college university or the international equivalent preferred Relevant experience as Naval Architect or Marine/Mechanical Engineer and/or experience with a shipping company classification society or similar Chief Engineer’s license and sailing experience preferred
  • Must be well-versed in all areas of maritime operations with specific familiarity with various onboard systems (HVAC Electrical Mechanical Engine Powerplant etc) and have the ability to read and understand technical drawings
  • Must be able to maintain a close working relationship with representatives from the various classification societies and governing agencies regulating our ships fleet-wide
  • Must display basic knowledge of regulations governing the maritime industry under IMO USPH and the US Coast Guard such as ISM SOLAS MARPOL STCW MLC VSP CFRs etc and understand how to access necessary information when required
  • Must have the ability to work efficiently and successfully in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and priorities
  • Proven ability to manage all financial aspects of daily operations and additional assigned projects including the successful identification of expense reductions through cost efficiencies
  • Must have strong supervisory skills and must possess the ability to communicate at the highest level of the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a multicultural environment with all levels of employees and management are essential

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for overall day-to-day operational management of assigned vessels to effectively and efficiently ensure they are operated and maintained in a safe compliant and reliable manner
  • Drive an active and ongoing dialog with both the shipboard and shoreside support teams regarding their operational needs and initiatives so that they are clearly understood prioritized and supported to ensure timely implementation While acting as guardian of our safe compliant and reliable values ensures that the teams are cognizant of the necessity for these to always be incorporated but also encourage in a proactive manner the search for innovative means to meet the requirements without undue delay or excessive cost
  • Maintains an awareness of the overall corporate and departmental goals key performance indicators and financial plans while encouraging a culture of effecting innovative means to meet and exceed not only the goals but also our guests’ expectations wherever safely possible
  • Encourages the use of new and progressive means to carry out onboard repairs and maintenance while ensuring all reporting and documentation requirements are fully met Actively leads the onboard teams and assigned technical superintendents in the development of specifications selection of vendors assessment of timelines and evaluation of costs associated with dry docks or other designated projects
  • Maintains frequent communications with other shoreside departments and the Global Marine Technical organization to assist in the selection and installation of machinery and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable laws regulations and policies from applicable governing agencies
  • Monitors vessel compliance with Flag / Class / Government Authority requirements and takes necessary actions to ensure the timely and complete clearance of Conditions of Class / Conditions of Authority / Audit Findings or any other requirements that may have been issued
  • Follows up with the onboard teams and other departments / vendors to ensure all incidents and damages as appropriate are fully investigated and reported and that damage claims if found applicable are validated and settled in a timely manner
  • Participates in succession planning training evaluation and development for all relevant shipboard personnel Interviews and approves as well as provides recommendations to the Human Resources Department regarding the education training and hiring of marine personnel
  • Cooperates with the Facilities department shipboard and shoreside on operational issues and projects impacting the Hotel and Marine areas of responsibility
  • Cooperates with the NewBuilding department when required to develop the new ship designs with the proper feedback and support from the Operational perspective
  • Assists and supports the DPA whenever necessary and communicates operational issues as and when they arise
