JOB DESCRIPTION

The Shop & Fleet Manager is responsible for advancing the company’s safety, performance, productivity, efficiency, and profitability. This is accomplished by ensuring the SGS facility (warehouse, office, yard, and dock), all equipment, vessels, and vehicles are managed and maintained to SGS’s unique standards, and by leading a small team (2–4 personnel) with close oversight to uphold safety and high performance. The Shop & Fleet Manager also ensures full compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards (OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard, ADCI, DOT, property landlord requirements, etc.)

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To manage and execute proactive maintenance programs for the facility, equipment, vehicles, and vessels in the most cost-effective manner while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. The goal is to support exceptional customer experiences in alignment with SGS’s Purpose and Core Values, through both strong administrative oversight and hands-on technical leadership.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Strong operational knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, including marine diesel engines, hydraulic systems, commercial diving equipment (life support systems, air compressors, etc.), marine vessels, and fleet vehicles.
  2. Proficient in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair.
  3. Experience with marine propulsion systems, electrical wiring and schematics, and use of diagnostic tools for equipment and engines.
  4. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and service bulletins.
  5. Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  6. Proven ability to work independently and to lead a team effectively, fostering collaboration and high performance among team members.
  7. Hands-on management approach – must be willing and able to work alongside the team on physical and technical tasks (this position is not solely desk-based).
  8. Working knowledge of relevant regulatory standards and compliance procedures (OSHA safety regulations, USCG marine safety requirements, DOT rules for vehicles, ADCI diving standards, etc.).
  9. Valid unrestricted driver’s license and the ability to obtain any required port/security clearances (e.g. TWIC for port access).
  10. Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Office 365/SharePoint), and ability to effectively use or learn maintenance management software (e.g. MTC Pro).

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  1. Certifications or formal training in life support equipment, diesel mechanics, hydraulics, electrical systems, or related technical fields.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent (required); additional technical schooling, management coursework, or formal training in marine diesel mechanics or operations is a plus.
  3. Minimum 3 years of experience in warehouse/equipment management and marine diesel systems (or similar mechanical/marine maintenance roles).
  4. Prior experience with commercial diving operations or managing diving life support systems is highly desirable. (Hands-on familiarity with dive compressors, dive helmets, underwater video systems, etc., will be a strong asset.)
Responsibilities

MARINE DIESEL MECHANIC DUTIES:

  1. Assign and/or perform routine maintenance on marine diesel engines (e.g. oil changes, filter replacements, belt adjustments).
  2. Diagnose and repair issues in diesel engines, propulsion systems, control systems, and hydraulic systems.
  3. Conduct sea trials to verify repairs and ensure vessels are fully operational and seaworthy.
  4. Retrofit or upgrade engines and equipment per manufacturer guidelines and industry standards.
  5. Maintain detailed records of work performed, parts used, and diagnostic results for each service or repair in MTC Pro.
  6. Train and guide team members or vessel operators in proper engine maintenance practices and troubleshooting techniques.
