Are you passionate about cheese, great customer service and independent food retail? The Cheeseworks, Cheltenham’s specialist cheese shop with over 20 years’ history, is looking for a Store Manager to lead our front-of-house team and oversee the day-to-day running of the shop.
About The Cheeseworks
For more than 20 years, The Cheeseworks has been at the heart of Cheltenham’s food scene, renowned for carefully sourced cheeses, fine accompaniments and a welcoming atmosphere. We pride ourselves on relaxed but attentive service, helping customers enjoy the best cheeses and related products.
We work closely with our partner business upstairs — a vibrant restaurant and kitchen — coordinating stock and orders where needed, but The Cheeseworks remains a distinct and specialist retail shop.
The Role
As Store Manager, you will lead a small front-of-house team, including an Assistant Manager, and report directly to the hands-on owners of the business. You will manage ordering of cheese, dry goods and alcohol, maintain stock levels, and provide excellent customer service with knowledgeable wine and cheese recommendations.
You will also occasionally lead wine and cheese tasting nights, helping to create memorable experiences for our customers. Liaising with the upstairs restaurant team regarding stock and ordering is key to ensuring smooth collaboration.
The role requires strong leadership during our busiest times, especially the Christmas period, when the shop experiences high demand and needs effective team coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support a small shop team, including an Assistant Manager
  • Oversee day-to-day shop operations and front-of-house service
  • Manage stock levels and place orders with suppliers and the upstairs kitchen
  • Deliver friendly, knowledgeable customer service including wine and alcohol recommendations
  • Occasionally lead wine and cheese tasting nights and other events
  • Provide strong leadership during busy periods, particularly at Christmas
  • Support and develop the team, including onboarding new staff
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety and licensing compliance
  • Assist with marketing, social media and promotion of events and offers
  • Help manage budgets and sales monitoring

Person Specification

  • Experience in retail or hospitality management, preferably food and drink
  • Good knowledge of cheese, wine or hospitality an advantage
  • Excellent communication and team leadership skills
  • Calm, organised, and able to work weekends and some evenings
  • Able to lead effectively during busy seasonal periods, especially Christmas
  • A positive, hands-on approach

What We Offer

  • A friendly, supportive workplace with a close-knit team
  • Opportunities for training and professional development
  • Working in a well-established independent business with a proud 20-year history
  • Competitive pay with regular performance reviews

To apply: Please send your CV and a short covering letter to cheeseworkscheltenham@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
