Description SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance, Shop Foreman, and Mechanics, the shop technician is responsible for performing basic mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance; provides support to Mechanics on more complex tasks; and contributes to the overall success of the Maintenance Department by working in a safe, efficient manner to keep the shop clean, organized, and well-stocked. This role requires a foundational understanding of mechanical systems and tools, along with a willingness to learn and develop skills in a hands-on environment. Key Responsibilities: Under general supervision, diagnose, service, and repair vehicles and equipment Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition Maintain a clean, organized work area. Collaborate with senior mechanics to learn best practices and techniques Perform preventative and unscheduled maintenance inspections as prescribed by the MOUTD maintenance plan. Maximize efficient use of vehicle repair parts and maintenance supplies. Perform all duties using the safest methods, adhering to all safety policies and utilizing PPE as practicable; ensure the proper use of all safety equipment and instructions, and perform all duties as prescribed by the MOUTD Maintenance Plan and all other safety rules, policies, and procedures set forth by MOUTD's handbooks, manuals, training sessions, and communications. Use diagnostic laptops, tablets, and specialized tools to identify issues; perform research as needed to identify best practices and address issues. Complete work orders and update service records in a timely manner. Assist with inventory, ordering parts, and picking up orders. Provide general labor to maintain a state of good repair of the shop and all agency assets. Other duties as assigned. Required Skills: Basic mechanical knowledge and familiarity with tools Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. Good communication skills and ability to work in a team Willingness to learn and adapt new technologies and methods. Basic computer skills and ability to communicate issues clearly to ensure smooth workflow Tool Requirements: Personal possession of a basic setup of wrenches, sockets, etc., to perform routine vehicle maintenance and service. Responsible use of specialty tools and diagnostic equipment provided by the agency for more complex tasks. Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent: technical training is a plus. Some experience in a mechanical or technical role is preferred but not required. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION Must have a current Texas Driver’s License minimum: Class “B” with airbrake and Passenger endorsement or ability to obtain Class “B” in a timely manner to be determined by Director. Training and testing is available on site. Must possess a valid form of identification for employment and any other identification documentation that may be requested when allowed or required by law HOURS OF OPERATION EZ-Rider's Maintenance Department hours of operation are 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Friday and 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturdays. Maintenance staff must be available to work shifts assigned during operational hours. Maintenance staff will be asked to participate in and work outside the regularly scheduled operating hours when MOUTD participates in and provides service for special events and projects. Demonstrate good judgment and common sense in all activities. Self-starter with ability to work independently with limited direction or supervision. Use of any safety devices provided to maintain high visibility will be required, including but not limited to uniforms with stripes, safety vests, cones, lights, flashers, triangles, flags, and such devices as outlined in MOUTD policy, procedure, and rule books, and in a manner consistent with the laws and rules regulating commercial drivers and traffic warning devices. Required to always keep safe distances from traffic and maintain a second clear route of escape from situations when confined in traffic. Responsible to use good judgment and common sense to actively create a safe work environment when on a road call, breakdown, or emergency that takes place near moving traffic. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment described here is what an employee will experience while doing the most important parts of this job. May be exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, or extreme heat. May perform work on the side of roadways, exposed to traffic situations, or near moving vehicles on public streets, highways, and thoroughfares. The agency provides safety devices to maintain high visibility, including but not limited to uniforms with stripes, safety vests, cones, lights, flashers, triangles, and flags Employees should keep safe distances at all times from traffic and give themselves a second clear route of escape from situations confined in traffic.
