POSITION SUMMARY:

The Simulation Technician is primarily responsible for the integration, operation, and maintenance of simulation technologies and related equipment. This includes managing high- and low-fidelity mannequins, task trainers, virtual and human simulators, as well as audio/video (A/V) systems used in simulation-based education. The technician ensures the seamless functionality of simulation scenarios by supporting the technical and mechanical aspects of the simulation lab environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A college degree or certified EMT, CNA in the area of health sciences and/or technology AND 1 year experience in an academic setting OR any combination of education, experience and training which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Individual must possess the knowledge and following skills and abilities or be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:

  • CHSOS Certification is recommended to be obtained within 2 years of employment.
  • Understanding of patient care simulation technologies and applications.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Basic knowledge of computer networking.
  • Effective verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
  • Ability to use a life cycle management process for implementation of changes in technology.
  • Ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a lively, collaborative environment.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to learn new skills.
  • Emerging developments in the use of human patient simulation learning.
  • Commitment to utilizing simulation methodology in learning and its ability to transform nursing
  • education.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize according to
  • faculty simulation needs.
  • Creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to solving problems.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, move from one area of the building to another on a regular basis, sit and use a computer for a long period of time.
  • Manual and physical dexterity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on computer display screen, handwritten forms, and printed on paper.
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to lift and carry a stack of forms, documents, and items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Carry out simulation activities under the direction of the Director/Assistant Director of Simulation to promote student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making.
  • Program software to model simulators’ physiological responses to instructor specifications.
  • Support role-playing applications, props placement, and moulage set-up before and after simulations to create a realistic healthcare setting.
  • Operate simulation mannequin sessions based on priorities identified by simulation faculty.
  • Set up, operate, and tear down nursing skills and simulation labs, including low-, medium-, and high-fidelity mannequins, standardized patients, and all related equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on simulation and lab equipment, including mannequins, audio/visual systems, IT components, and patient care equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of lab and simulation environments.
  • Train and assist faculty in the use of simulation equipment, A/V systems, manikin programming, standardized patient preparation, electronic health records, and medication dispensing units.
  • Collaborate with simulation faculty to plan and deliver simulation sessions.
  • Conduct tours and facilitate simulation sessions for internal and external groups.
  • Maintain and update inventory of supplies and equipment; coordinate with vendors for purchases and budget recommendations.
  • Record and play back A/V simulations; provide first-line technical support for simulation multimedia and A/V systems.
  • Coordinate with IT staff and vendors to perform software updates for simulation, computer, and A/V equipment.
  • Assist with data entry and recordkeeping as required.
  • Participate in BLS instruction as scheduled.
  • Maintain regular attendance and reliability, with the expectation of 40+ hours per week.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
