DESCRIPTION

Somerset House Trust is seeking Ice Marshals to join the Visitor Experience department for SKATE - hailed as one of the capital’s favourite winter experiences - with specific responsibility for visitors on the ice rink, ensuring their safety and enjoyment.
This role is based on the ice rink and in skate hire. You should be friendly and engaging and enjoy working with the public. You will be required to assist skaters of all abilities and be willing to share your skating tips with our visitors.
You must be an experienced and confident practising ice skater. Each applicant will be required to complete a Skate test as part of the recruitment process to ensure that you meet the required standards of skating ability.
Please note in order to be successful in this role you must provide your own ice skates. NB: Speed skates are not permitted.
Working hours: Hours of work are variable to support the operational delivery of SKATE. Shifts will be rostered between the hours of 7:30-23:30. Please note that over the holiday period we are only closed on Christmas Day.

WELCOME AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Provide a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors during SKATE at Somerset House.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to talk and engage with visitors, share your own sense of enthusiasm, passion and fun with our visitors.
  • Share your knowledge of Somerset House, its programme, history and provide an enjoyable experience for all our visitors.
  • Strive to make the visitor experience world class.
  • Carry out skate hire services in a friendly and efficient manner, ensuring shoes and boots are logged in and out and are suitable to use.
  • Actively monitor the rink and customers by skating with the public and supporting where necessary.
  • Provide ice guiding services to visitors, supporting all ranges of skating ability, including acting as a specific hired SKATE Mate for groups and by supporting children in the training Rink.
  • Overseeing the use of skate aid stabilisers.
  • Strive to resolve issues quickly before they escalate, using a range of communication styles to suit our different visitors.
  • To assist a diverse range of visitors, including those with disabilities supporting any Access needs.
  • Share knowledge with colleagues and teach new members of the team procedures, expectations and best practice.
  • Any other duties consistent with the role and as requested by members of the SKATE or Visitor Experience Management teams.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE:

  • Applicants must be confident active skaters with a minimum 2 years’ experience on the ice, demonstrating the ability to skate confidently forwards and backwards and be able to make a controlled stop.
  • You must be able to demonstrate exceptional customer service skills including the ability to assist all visitors in a helpful, friendly, courteous, and confident manner.
  • You must be confident and be able to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Have the confidence to assist and guide visitors with access requirements.
  • You must have the ability to stay calm under pressure and solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Have experience working as part of a team in a supportive and cooperative manner.
  • You must be available to work flexibly including working evenings, weekends and bank holidays over the festive season.
