POSITION OVERVIEW:

These are experienced ski patrollers with a minimum of two (2) previous seasons experience at Marmot Basin or four (4) seasons at another comparable ski hill. The patroller has exceeded all Grade 1 & 2 performance requirements and has demonstrated their ability to function as a strong independent Ski Patroller, patrol mentor and group leader. These Patrollers are familiar with the minutia of ski patrolling and can teach most Grade 1 and 2 patroller skills to others or lead large work projects.
The incumbent should expect to be working outside in any, all and sometimes adverse weather conditions.
This is a full-time seasonal role within the Safety Operations Department. This position has a compressed schedule/two-week rotating cycle: Nine (9) hours per day (operating season), eight (8) hours per day (non-operating season). Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has exceeded all Grade 2 Ski Patroller performance requirements.
  • Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent
  • 80 hour advanced First Aid course or higher with Advanced first aid protocol certificate and a current CPR certification
  • A minimum of 80 patient interactions
  • Primary care paramedic or advanced care paramedic (preferred) with Alberta College of Paramedics accreditation
  • Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) Industry Training Program (ITP) level 1
  • CAA ITP Avalanche Search and Rescue course (AvSar) 2
  • CAA ITP Basic Weather Course (preferred)
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100
  • Alberta non mining blasting ticket (preferred)
  • Completed Route Leader check sheet (preferred)
  • Intermediate snowmobile operator advanced snowmobile operator skills preferred
  • Have a Natural Resources Canada Explosive Regulatory Division letter of approval
  • Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Person Record Check on file with Human Resources at the beginning of each ski season
  • workplace hazardous materials training (WHMIS)
  • Working at heights training, other rope rescue training/certification (preferred)

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated strong skiing ability in all mountain and snow conditions in “Advanced/Most difficult” and “Expert/Extreme” terrain
  • Physically fit and able to ski with heavy loads (25+ kg). Has proven physical ability to perform all ski patroller tasks
  • Advanced understanding of all sections of Marmot Basin’s Safety Operations Training Manual, policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and First Aid algorithms. Be able to appropriately apply these concepts
  • Marmot Basin First Aid refresher including the advanced first aid skill training and can lead teams in the applications of the advanced first aid protocols.
  • Proven competency with radio protocols, knows all 10 codes, emergency colour calls, standard radio calls, as well as professional use of the radio. Is able to fill the Dispatch role
  • Understands the needs and principals involved with Accident Investigations (AI). Know all related paper work. Is or has been on the AI team and could complete an AI unassisted if directed to do so by their supervisor.
  • Heightened understanding of Marmot Basins on slope risk management. Can perform high quality run checks and risk mitigation, and explain associated risk management principles, including the proper completion of all associated paperwork. Can teach the same to others.
  • Know where all risk management signs and fences should be and how they should be set up.
  • Know appropriate early season, atypical risk management signs and fences and be able to set up with minimal explanation or supervision.
  • Moves self and equipment around the hill appropriately and with no prompting
  • Know and can teach all sweeps including Eagle’s Ridge East sweeps.
  • Detailed knowledge of Marmot Basin’s terrain, including all runs, often used nicknames, access and egress trails, all runs in Eagle’s East, boundary lines, back country access points, kiddy/tree trails etc.
  • Apply first aid and patient care principals and concepts. Has a moderate amount of practical experience and patient interaction; a minimum of 80 patient interactions
  • Can demonstrate a high level of practical first aid experience; able to apply this experience to any situations and perform and lead patient treatment and extrication in all Marmot Basin terrain
  • Take a lead position in serious incidents; (MCI, Code Brown, Code Red etc)
  • High skill level of Rescue Toboggan (10-23) handling in all terrain (includes Akia toboggan use).
  • Demonstrates competent snowmobile operations at the Basic level (intermediate preferred). Yearly review Marmot Basin’s snow mobile operators manual, can a pre-trip inspection, knows all standard snow mobile routes, on hill speed limit, and safe operation procedures
  • High level of understanding of Marmot Basins Avalanche Safety Plan. Know their role and responsibilities within it. Can explain the roles and responsibilities of Grade 1 and Grade 2 Ski Patrollers to those staff.
  • Heightened level of understanding of the Avalanche rescue plan and companion rescue
  • Demonstrate skills of an AvSar strike team leader; Site assessment, witness interview, direct skilled team members in an affective search for five targets (transceiver, clue, and or Recco). Employ concepts of; scene set up, flagging, communication and avalanche triage. Three of five targets recovered in less than 10 minutes after interview is complete.
  • Attended Marmot Basin’s Annual explosives refresher
  • Able to perform maintenance cuts in all avalanche terrain: has demonstrated and can explain the reasons for and the safety principals of this action.
  • Able to lead another Patroller in ski cutting
  • Able to give detailed and appropriate snowpack and weather condition updates to the area leader/forecaster
  • Attended Marmot Basin’s annual explosives refresher, and have a minimum of six (6) hours of explosives related CPD annually
  • Maintain an explosives log (minimum of three (3) missions and fifteen (15) explosives logged per season for any ticketed blaster)
  • Can safely perform self-evacuation from a chair lift
  • Can lead a manual chairlift evacuation team, with an inexperienced partner
  • Can perform a lift line check and explain it
  • Can perform a lift lock out
  • Has been trained in basic fall arrest and can climb tower
  • Can explain and set up a shive by-pass
  • Act as a RIT for chair lift evac (preferred)
  • Deescalate tense situations, remove ski passes, escort guest from the premises, or refer an escalating situation to a supervisor
  • Read and signed off on Marmot Basin’s Employee Handbook
  • Read and signed off on the Safety Operations Work Hazard Assessment
  • Complete all regular currency training and maintain training checklist(s).
  • Not to exceeded training levels or scope of practice in any task.
Responsibilities
  • On-slope risk management: identify and mitigate hazards on hill (run checks, hazard marking) and complete all associated paper work
  • On-slope maintenance: perform trail maintenance as required (snow farming, shoveling, fencing etc.), maintenance cuts in open avalanche terrain
  • Enforce the “Alpine Responsibility Code”, slow riding zones, area closures
  • Identify and address safety concerns pertaining to staff and guests. Ensure Supervisors are made aware of residual risks of concern
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment locations, use, and movement
  • Skillfully apply Marmot Basin’s radio procedures and protocols and able to fill the Dispatch role.
  • When directed can instruct basic and advanced patrol topics, including: sweeps, hazard marking, rescue toboggans (10-23) use, first aid skills, patient extrication, patient packaging, basic AvSar skills, etc.
  • Provide on-hill rescue, first aid and triage: attend, treat and transport patient with or without assistance. Can lead and direct other in the same.
  • Act as a Team Member (potentially as a route leader) during avalanche control missions, including working as an assistant blaster or blaster
  • Act as a Team leader during lift evacuations, perform intermediate or advanced skills associated with “Lift down procedures (10-30’s)” as well as manual and self-evacuation
  • Act as a Team Member, and potentially a team leader, during avalanche rescue and missing person response
  • Perform end of day area checks and sweeps
  • Operate snowmobiles
  • Lead training, work projects and incidents as and when directed.
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner as a member of the Safety Operations team
  • Provided leadership and mentor ship to other staff working n their area
  • Act as the ski patrol supervisor for a short term basis if needed.
  • Respect and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as set in the “Corporate Policies”, “Employee Handbook” and “Safety Operations Training Manual”
  • Understand and adhere to Ski Marmot Basin’s “Harassment Policy” and the company’s “Privacy Policy”.
  • Report damage to vehicles to the Vehicle Maintenance supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
