Description Sleepaway Camp – Unit Counselor Are you excited about mentoring youth and creating meaningful camp experiences? Join our team at Camp Conowingo, a 600-acre sleepaway camp in Conowingo, Maryland, along the Susquehanna River. Unit Counselors live and work closely with campers, helping create a fun, supportive, and inclusive community while enjoying life outdoors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities · Live in a unit with campers and serve as a leader for an assigned group alongside the Unit Leader · Support campers with daily routines while following a structured yet flexible schedule · Lead and assist with engaging activities in collaboration with camp staff · Maintain program and activity equipment · Contribute to the care and upkeep of camp facilities and shared spaces · Participate fully in camp life, including meetings, activities, kapers, and special events · Practice risk assessment and ensure camper safety at all times · Complete required paperwork accurately and on time · Support camper-led decision-making, accountability, and positive behavior management · Promote Girl Scout values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion · Adapt to changing situations with a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment · Completes additional responsibilities as needed to support program operations. General Qualifications for All Camp Staff · Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with change · Able to work effectively with diverse groups of campers and adults · Team-oriented, willing to take initiative, and follow direction as needed · Enthusiastic about the outdoors and living in a rustic setting Time Commitment · Seasonal, live-on-site position · Includes paid staff training · Two hours of scheduled time off daily and one day off per week (typically Saturday) Requirements Skills, Education, and/or Relevant Experience for Unit Counselor · Must be 18 years or older· Preferred experience in youth leadership, education, recreation, or camp settings· Ability to supervise campers and understand the needs of girls across age levels· Strong organizational skills and ability to follow a daily schedule with flexibility· Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain during paid training· Excellent communication skills with children and adults· Physical stamina to supervise campers during long, active days· Ability to recognize and respond quickly to safety concerns and emergencies· Must pass required background, fingerprint, and drug screenings
Responsibilities
Unit Counselors live with campers, serving as leaders for assigned groups, supporting daily routines, and leading engaging activities in collaboration with staff. Responsibilities also include maintaining equipment, contributing to facility upkeep, ensuring camper safety, and promoting Girl Scout values.
