From national press outlets to voting and election junkies to first-time voters, a broad coalition of stakeholders rely on our digital platforms as the go-to source for voting rights, elections and democracy. Here’s our approach: Social media isn’t just a marketing tool. It’s a bridge connecting millions of people to the greatest issues facing our democracy. In other words, social is the main megaphone for all things Democracy Docket and the primary way we disseminate our content and expand our reach. How You Support The Mission As the Social Media Editor, you will help curate the voice of Democracy Docket on our text-based platforms, such as Bluesky, X, Threads, Facebook, Reddit – reaching over 3 million users a day. You play a critical role in shaping how millions of people understand the fight for voting rights and democratic institutions. This is not just about posting content; it is about translating complex legal and political news into accessible, high-quality social storytelling that informs, inspires and mobilizes voters. This is a hands-on role for a short-form writer with sharp news judgment. You follow political news closely and understand how platforms can be harnessed to expand reach and influence. You move easily between strategic thinking and practical execution, owning your portfolio of work with curiosity and consistency. You understand the moment we are in and are excited to deliver timely, high-quality social content that shapes the narrative around the future of democracy. This position will report to the Social Content & Strategy Manager and work closely with the Social, Video, Growth and News team. How You’ll Contribute Craft Compelling Copy: Write and schedule timely, sharp and informative content for X, Bluesky, Facebook, Threads, Reddit and LinkedIn. You will find innovative angles to resurface our reporting and keep stories alive beyond their initial publication. Shape the Narrative: Translate high-level reporting into engaging social commentary that captures the urgency of the moment without sacrificing accuracy. Drive Engagement: Foster a constructive and active community by monitoring conversations and responding to our audience in real-time. Stay Ahead of Trends: Maintain a deep curiosity about emerging platforms, storytelling tools and best practices to keep Democracy Docket competitive and relevant. Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with our News, Research, Video, and Growth teams to ensure all content is on-brand, accurate and aligned with our broader strategic goals. Make Data Informed Decisions: Monitor profile and post performance to inform strategy, improve reach and guide experimentation Manage the Calendar: Own the day-to-day execution of the social content calendar, ensuring a consistent and strategic cadence of posts. What Experience You Bring 4+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism or social media, preferably within a newsroom or political environment. Exceptional writing skills with a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to write clear, concise and compelling copy for social audiences. You know how to capture a voice that is authoritative yet accessible. Political fluency with a strong interest in voting rights, elections and the threats facing democratic institutions. Platform mastery with a deep understanding of text-based social ecosystems and the community engagement strategies that work best on each. Proven experience managing content calendars, production workflows and editorial packaging for large-scale audiences (5–25M+ reach.) Newsroom agility with the ability to multitask, prioritize and maintain high standards of quality, especially during high-volume cycles. Data-informed mindset with familiarity in using social analytics to refine strategy and improve reach. Work Environment This is a full-time role based out of our Washington, D.C. office. While candidates in D.C. are preferred, New York/New Jersey applicants will be considered. We offer a hybrid schedule: Mondays and Fridays are remote; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are in-office. Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and portfolio of relevant work.
