The National Lottery Community Fund is delivering an environmental strategy that will not only help communities we Fund but also identifies us as an exemplar in managing our own environmental impact. It’s an exciting time to join the Fund as the Environmental Officer role will help lead our journey to Net Zero emissions as well as support our Environmental Strategy both internally and externally. An interest in climate change and an understanding of environmental sustainability in the workplace will be a key part to this role as well as the confidence to bring in new ideas and support engagement of staff.

The role will sit within the Facilities team which helps support all nine of the Fund’s offices which are based in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

  • The Environmental Officer role will be varied but some of the key responsibilities are:You will be responsible for facilitating the Fund’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and move towards being a Net Zero organisation. You will lead best practice around environmental sustainability across sites and engage staff to consider their own impact.


  • You will draw learning and resources from external sources, to develop an array of approaches, with a view to getting all staff to consider the resources they use, irrespective of their motivation


  • You will support the Fund’s established Climate Action Network, ensuring that they all feel connected to and can contribute to energy and resource savings projects/initiatives/themes.


  • You will ensure projects are well planned and progressed and will collate and share environmental measures to demonstrate achievements.


  • You will help with environmental data capture and carbon accounting and reporting on any trends both internally and externally.


  • You will also provide relevant updates to Senior Management Team (SMT) and work closely with the SMT lead on environmental sustainability, highlighting any issues requiring resolution


  • The role will mainly be based in one office, but you’ll be required to engage across the Fund and develop communications that will reach all staff.


  • You may be drawn into any project/team to advise on environmental sustainability.


  • You will engage with internal and external stakeholders and will support the communication of strong external messages declaring our dedication to working sustainably.


  • Key responsibilities may include:Serve as the Fund’s lead contact for environmental matters, providing advice and maintaining oversight of environmental activity.
  • Support the implementation and delivery of the Fund’s Net Zero commitments through effective stakeholder engagement and strategic guidance.
  • Coordinate environmental data collection and reporting processes to track performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Draft and coordinate environmental reports, including following guidance for sustainability returns to DCMS and the sustainability report for inclusion within the Annual Report and Accounts.


Skills & RequirementsThe candidate for this role should have passion, commitment, and enthusiasm to help deliver our Net Zero targets. They should have good communication skills as well as strong analytical and report writing skills. Previous experience of environmental sustainability within the workplace would be beneficial.

  3. Ability to confidently engage with similar ALB’s to understand their Environmental work
  4. Ability to confidently engage with internal and external stakeholders in order collect relevant environmental reporting data

Environmental Compliance and Assurance Co-ordinator

£35,530 - £41,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 6A)

Remote, with occasional travel to our Manchester city centre head office (around 6 to 8 times a year) We're looking for an Environmental Compliance and Assurance Co-ordinator to join our Property team and help drive forward our sustainability ambitions. This is a great opportunity to shape how we manage environmental compliance across our trading and non-trading estate, ensuring we meet our legal responsibilities while supporting Co-op's commitment to creating a more sustainable future. Why this role matters Protecting the environment is a key priority for Co-op, and this role will play an important part in turning our ambitions into action. As an Environmental Compliance Co-ordinator, you'll champion environmental compliance agenda across Property, helping colleagues understand environmental risks, improve compliance standards, and embed best practice into everyday decision-making. Working closely with our Sustainability, Risk and Safety teams, you'll help build the frameworks, assurance plans and ways of working that protect our business, support continuous improvement, and create lasting positive impact. What you'll do * Develop and maintain environmental compliance frameworks, policies, procedures and assurance plans across the Property function

* Champion environmental compliance and sustainability best practice across Co-op Property teams

* Create and manage environmental compliance roadmaps, working with the Head of RHSE to review and update priorities as needed

* Monitor environmental and sustainability risks across our property portfolio and recommend appropriate actions

* Build strong relationships with colleagues across Property, Sustainability, Risk and Safety teams to support effective risk management

* Provide expert advice and practical guidance on environmental compliance matters, balancing risk with commercial considerations

* Act as a trusted critical friend, constructively challenging decisions and escalating concerns where appropriate

* Support and lead investigations into environmental compliance breaches, working with external authorities where required

* Horizon scan for emerging environmental legislation and risks, helping the business prepare for future requirements

* Provide assurance and reporting to leadership teams on the effectiveness of environmental compliance and management arrangements
