SUMMARY

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC REQUIREMENTS. To qualify for appointment as a social worker in VHA, all applicants must meet the following:
a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.
b. Education. Have a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree in social work.
c. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level.
d. Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard (9/10/2019) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure or certification that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
e. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

  • Serves as Program Coordinator at the GS-12 grade and is responsible for coordination, management, and clinical oversight of the VA Boston Huntington House as well as the development and management of the Master of Social Work Trainee Program.
  • Supervises two Huntington House Program Support Assistants assigned to the Huntington House at the Jamaica Plain campus.
  • Actively participates in planning, establishing, and implementing policies and procedures pertaining to Huntington House’s guests as well as working in collaboration with the medical services to address complex challenges in coordinating lodging before medical appointments and surgical procedures.
  • Maximizes psychosocial quality of life issues in order to assist Veterans during their stay at the Huntington House, and issues related to access to care.
  • Monitors and actively intervenes when the caregiver or veterans’ health and behavioral issues impact the experience of the identified veterans or caregiver in the program. The Program Coordinator may deny access to disruptive or inappropriate veterans given the program goals. All Huntington House consults are completed through the CPRS/GUI patient’s chart; the incumbent ensures completion of the consults in a timely fashion.
  • Uses clinical Social Work skills to screen out inappropriate referrals which would contraindicate participation in the group lodging situation.
  • Provides proper screening and documentation as to decisions made regarding referrals in the Social Work consult and in the chart, as appropriate.
  • Exercises good judgment and document appropriately.
  • Develops policies and procedures for the Master of Social Work Trainee Program and prepares reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use.
  • Manages and controls the use of data related to the Master of Social Work Trainee Program regarding day to day functioning and program evaluation.
  • In conjunction with co-coordinator or designee, plans, organizes and directs administrative, operational, patient and personnel activities for the program.
  • Develops and manages the Master of Social Work Trainee Program at the VA Boston Healthcare System which includes: recruitment and training of trainees; coordination and training of clinicians who are intern supervisors in various medical and mental health placements; liaison with local graduate schools; management of available Social Work stipends; and close collaborator with all Social Work programs.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
Telework: Ad Hoc Telework. Telework that occurs on an occasional, non-routine basis. Telework that occurs to complete short-term special assignments or to accommodate special circumstances even though the telework arrangement may occur continuously for a limited and specific period of time.
