THE POSITION

MAG is seeking a qualified, team-oriented student in Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field for a paid internship. The position is part of the Data Management and Application team in the Transportation Division.
Interns at MAG contribute to work that supports real-world planning decisions across the region. Interns will work alongside experienced planners, analysts, and GIS professionals who are committed to supporting your growth.

This position supports the Socioeconomic Data Program. The primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing and analyzing census, demographic, and housing data
  • Developing, maintaining, and enhancing multiple large and complex socioeconomic and transportation datasets for research and analysis
  • Conducting spatial analyses, including geoprocessing and advanced data transformation
  • Enhancing and developing automated SQL scripts to improve data acquisition and processing
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing current and historical data through tables, graphs, charts, and cartographic outputs
  • Coordinating with MAG member agencies, stakeholders, and the public to collect and review data and fulfill data/analysis requests
  • Conducting research and analysis independently and with a team

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Candidate should have working knowledge of ESRI’s GIS suite and geoprocessing tools, relational database management systems such as MS SQL, statistics, MS Office Suite, along with a willingness to advance their technological knowledge. Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills are required. Knowledge of development languages such as Python, R, Java, and/or statistical packages/languages is desirable. Experience working with census data or economic impact analysis is a plus.

Experience and Education

  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
  • At least two (2) years of relevant college coursework in Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
