IT SERVICES > SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Looking for a job where you can make a difference? Join our vibrant Software Delivery Teams and work with us on mobile app development.
The University of York has set out its vision to become a “University for Public Good” in its 2023 strategy. IT Services actively supports that commitment. Working at a learning organisation, we can offer you a collaborative, flexible environment where growth is supported, teams care for each other and enquiring minds can thrive.
The IT Services software development teams are responsible for providing the technical infrastructure underpinning many of the University’s core enterprise systems, such as the virtual learning environment, student record system, finance and HR systems. These are large, complex systems and we work closely with other departments to integrate, adapt and develop these software applications to meet new requirements emerging in response to a competitive Higher Education environment. We also build products in-house.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE:

  • Experience of software development and the continuous improvement and delivery of quality software and digital services.
  • A willingness to mentor and lead others in agile practices and self development. You should understand both software code and the people who write it.
  • A passion for new technologies and how they can enhance the digital student experience at York.
  • Enthusiasm for curiosity-driven problem-solving as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team.
Please see the attached job description for the full list of essential and desirable criteria.
Not sure you meet all the criteria? Let us decide! Research shows that women and members of other under-represented groups tend to not apply to jobs when they think they may not meet every qualification, when, in fact, they often do!
The role is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in management and leadership while still being an active developer.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING OUR STAFF TO LEARN NEW SKILLS AND AS SUCH WOULD LIKE TO ACTIVELY ENCOURAGE APPLICATIONS FROM PEOPLE WHO CAN BRING NEW EXPERIENCES AND IDEAS, AND HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE AND APTITUDE.

Interview date: TBC
For an informal discussion about the post, please contact: Joel Smith, Head of Product (joel.smith@york.ac.uk)
The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.
We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.
We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff. #EqualityatYork

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Software Development Team Lead to join one of our agile teams, working on our in-house built student mobile app, MyUoY.
The MyUoY team develops and maintains York’s student mobile app enabling students to manage day-to-day student life on the go. The team is responsible for a variety of cloud-based back-end systems and APIs, including a headless CMS. This role primarily has a back-end development focus, as you’ll be helping develop new back-end infrastructure to support exciting new features in the app and supporting existing APIs.
As a Development Team Leader, you and a Product Owner will co-lead an agile team of software developers and business analysts. You will line-manage software developers, recruit and onboard new members of staff, coaching and supporting them and helping them further their careers.
The team works in a hybrid manner, both working from home and regularly coming onto our York campus.
