How will you make an impact in this role?
We are seeking a versatile and motivated Software Engineer with expertise in both frontend and backend development to join our Developer Advocacy team within Developer Experience. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building scalable, high-performance applications using modern technologies! You will work across the stack, contributing to both frontend and backend systems within our portfolio (Open Source Portal, Engineering Fundamentals Ladder, American Express TechBlog), supporting our colleagues as a Developer Advocate and helping to drive Engineering Excellence across our organisation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

3+ years of professional experience in software development, with a focus on both frontend and backend engineering.
Proficiency in React, JavaScript, and TypeScript for building modern, adaptable web applications.
Strong experience with backend development using Node.js, Java, and Kotlin.
Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and microservices architecture.
Familiarity with version control systems like Git and CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization tools like Docker is a plus.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of modern frontend build tools and frameworks (e.g., Webpack, Vite).
Familiarity with Kotlin-based frameworks like Ktor or Spring Boot.
Understanding of database technologies (SQL and NoSQL).
Exposure to Agile development methodologies.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable, and secure applications across the full stack.
Build intuitive and adaptable user interfaces using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
Develop backend services and APIs using Node.js, Java, and Kotlin.
Collaborate with multi-functional teams, including product & program managers, designers, and other specialists, to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, adhering to the Amex Way and our coding standards.
Optimize application performance and ensure high availability and reliability.
Participate in code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure the quality of the codebase.
Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends, and apply them to improve development processes and products.
Drive community engagement across our internal developer conferences (GuildCon and DevCon)!
Help ensure all Engineers across Technology are developing the “Amex Way”!
Help grow our Open Source community
Support other technology organisations to set the standard and drive engineering excellence.
