Join the BBC’s Data Sourcing team as we revolutionize the way our organization makes decisions! As a Software Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in empowering our colleagues across Radio, TV, News, and Sports to make data-driven choices that shape the future of the BBC. Our mission is to keep the BBC at the forefront of innovation, and we’re looking for talented engineers like you to help us achieve it.
Imagine being part of a team that’s constantly pushing boundaries, experimenting with new technologies, and collaborating with experts from around the world. That’s what it means to work with the BBC Data Sourcing team! We’re not just building software - we’re creating a platform for change, one line of code at a time.
As part of our brand-new tech hub in Newcastle, you’ll be part of a vibrant community that’s passionate about making a difference. With a culture that values diversity, integrity, and merit, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your skills, learn from others, and make your mark on the world. So why wait? • Backend: JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Cloud: AWS (S3, EC2, ECS, SQS, etc)
  • Deployment: Jenkins, Codebuild, CodePipeline.
  • Testing: JUnit, Jest, Cypress, Cucumber, Rest-Assured, Postman, Gatling
  • Database: SQL (Postgres), MongoDB, DynamoDB

As long as you have solid principles as software engineer and are able to learn then you will shine in this team. Additionally the following are also in use and you would be given support to learn any that you don’t have experience with:

  • Continuous integration/deployment
  • Test Driven Development and testing practices
  • BDD with Cucumber
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its associated technologies
  • Agile development practices
  • Code quality practices (incl. code reviews and pair programming)

We create and support reliable and scalable cloud-based services on Amazon Web Services, use Git and GitHub for version control and practice pair programming and Test-Driven Development where possible.
In a nutshell, we seek an enthusiastic engineer who is looking for a diverse challenge, is willing to learn, and upholds the BBC’s values, all while driving technical excellence. We look to grow and develop our engineers and give them the skills they need to deliver for the BBC and progress in their own careers. If this sounds like your cup of tea, we’d love to hear from you.

ABOUT THE BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual’s unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
