Purpose
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer with expertise in Apex, Java, C#, SQL, JavaScript, Middleware and strong experience in software application design. This position reports to the Director of Applications and Data and serves as a member of cross-functional teams supporting the needs of faculty, staff, and students at the McCombs School of Business. The scope of this role includes designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable, high-quality software solutions. The ideal candidate will have experience in both backend and frontend development, as well as in designing application architectures that drive digital transformation.
The work involves developing an understanding of the business needs; eliciting, documenting, and clarifying requirements; designing, developing, and testing applications, databases, and business intelligence solutions; integrating custom, commercial, and software-as-a-service applications. A strong candidate has a clear understanding of designing and developing applications that are secure, scalable, reliable, and easy to use. Strong communication skills and teamwork are highly valued.
Responsibilities

Design, develop, and implement custom applications and solutions to support business processes.

  • Design and architect software applications and services, ensuring scalability, flexibility, and performance using Apex, Java or C# technologies.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code adhering to best practices in software design patterns.
  • Develop and optimize SOQL and SQL queries, ensure efficient data design and data modeling.
  • Design user-friendly interfaces and experiences in collaboration with front-end developers using JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS and modern frameworks (e.g., Visualforce, Aura Components, Lightning Web Components, React or Angular).
  • Design and run automated data imports, programmatic data mapping, and data transformation in a relational database using best practices and tools.
  • Work within DevOps to perform hands-on software development and unit testing.

Perform software integration testing, facilitate user acceptance testing and support production validation.

Lead and participate in the design of system architectures and data flows, ensuring seamless integration between front-end, back-end, and external systems.

  • Work with University’s shared technical environment, campus IT architecture, best practices from peer institutions and industry to implement technologies and services.
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends, technologies, and methodologies in software design, architecture, and development.

Perform regular system maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting, ensuring IT application infrastructure is running optimally.

  • Use best practices for continuous build, release, enhancements and bug fixes as needed.
  • Ensure that systems are developed with a focus on scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues, particularly those related to system design, scalability, and integration.

Participate, and collaborate with cross-functional teams, in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), including business requirements gathering, high level architecture decisions, cost estimates and production release support.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including business analysts, product owners, architects and application designers, to translate business requirements into robust, scalable software architecture and design solutions.
  • Perform cost analysis and estimates.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent or 4 years of relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in software development with expertise in Apex, Java or C#.
  • Experience of SOQL or SQL queries, including data modeling, database design, and query optimization.
  • Experience in JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS and modern frameworks Visualforce, Aura Components, Lightning Web Components, React or Angular.
  • Experience in unit testing, integration testing, and test-driven development (TDD) to ensure software quality.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN) and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD).
  • Knowledge in RESTful APIs, microservices, and service-oriented architecture (SOA).
  • Familiarity with Agile or Scrum methodologies and the ability to participate in and lead sprint planning, design sessions, and retrospectives.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I.
  • Experience with the Salesforce platforms.
  • Experience with integrating Salesforce with other systems using APIs for REST/JSON, SOAP/XML services.
  • Experience in software application design and architecture, with a proven track record of designing and building scalable, performant applications.
  • Experience with application containerization and microservices architecture.
  • Experience with cloud architectures (e.g., Azure, AWS), including designing applications for the cloud, utilizing cloud-native services, and ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Experience with University data workflow and knowledge of business processes.
  • Experience with data-focused applications and projects (ETLs, data warehouses, analytics, etc.)
  • Experience with API management and ESB deployment.
  • Knowledge with mainframe technologies.
  • Ability to flourish in a complex environment that includes numerous stakeholder groups, competing priorities, and matrix management structure.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on design challenges, performance optimization, and scalability.

Salary Range
$70,000 - $100,000 depending on qualifications.

Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Works in a shared office environment. Some lifting, up to 25 lbs.
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required during peak periods and special events.
  • This is an Austin, TX- based position.
