Description Summary The Software Engineer position supports HIG's technology team in building and maintaining software applications. This position contributes to real projects, writes clean code, and grows their technical skills in a professional environment. 50% Software Development Contributes to frontend and backend development efforts across HIG technology projects. Receptive to AI-assisted development workflows, with a strong willingness to learn and adopt new technologies. Building and maintaining features across frontend (React/TypeScript) and backend (Node.js, Python, or similar) Writing clean, tested, and documented code Debugging issues and improving existing systems Collaborating with product and design to turn requirements into working software 30% Collaboration & Process Participates actively in team workflows and development processes. Participating in code reviews, sprint planning, and team standups Maintaining clear communication with team members on task status and blockers Following established development standards and procedures 10% Teamwork Works together with the technology team and other departments. Volunteers to back up and/or assist others as needed. Manages PTO to work with departmental needs. 10% Determination Displays commitment and initiative to meet department and agency education goals as set forth in the organization's education program. Requirements Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) in a professional development workflow. Basic understanding of REST APIs, databases, and version control (Git) required. Experience with cloud platforms and solid back-end experience in one or more languages/frameworks (C#/.NET, Node.js, Python, or Java) preferred. Education and/or Experience Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
