DESCRIPTION

The IS Software Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end development and quality of solutions and services that support bioinformatics efforts in cancer research and add strategic value to PSJH. This position specifically focuses on developing and optimizing bioinformatics tools, pipelines, and data analysis workflows to support genomic and clinical research. The engineer will work closely with researchers, data scientists, and clinicians to process, analyze, and interpret large-scale biological datasets, ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of bioinformatics solutions. They evaluate requirements, estimate costs, and design and implement solutions and services that advance computational approaches in cancer genomics and precision medicine.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree - Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent educ/experience.
  • 1 year of related experience; software engineering preferred.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming in C#, Java, Python or equivalent.
  • Experience with agile methodologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Programming Languages – Proficiency in Python, R, and Bash scripting is highly desirable. Experience with C++, Java, or Perl can also be useful.
  • Version Control & DevOps – Proficiency in Git/GitHub, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines to streamline bioinformatics workflows.
  • Big Data & Cloud Computing – Familiarity with Hadoop, Spark, AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure for handling large-scale biological data.
  • Workflow Automation – Experience with workflow management systems like Make, Nextflow, Snakemake, or CWL for reproducible data pipelines.
  • Genomics & Transcriptomics – Some understanding of next-generation sequencing (NGS), RNA-Seq, spatial biology, variant calling, annotation tools, or other bioinformatics related tools.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) & Clinical Data – Experience working with clinical datasets and integrating them with omics data.
  • Interdisciplinary Communication – Ability to collaborate with biologists, clinicians, and researchers to translate biological questions into computational solutions.
  • Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking – Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and optimize bioinformatics algorithms and workflows.
  • Project Management – Experience leading bioinformatics projects and working within agile development frameworks.
