Staff Software Engineer (f/m/d)

Location: Berlin, Germany (Hybrid - up to 2 days remote per week)

Type: Permanent, Full-time

Salary: Up to 120,000 euros

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to lead significant platform and product integration initiatives.


What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the design and implementation of major platform and product integration initiatives
  • Drive technical direction and contribute to the engineering roadmap
  • Write and sponsor design documents and lead meaningful technical reviews
  • Set high standards for code quality, architecture and engineering practices
  • Mentor and influence senior engineers across the wider organisation
  • Design and operate distributed, event-driven systems
  • Apply patterns including CQRS, event sourcing and API gateways where appropriate
  • Use strong architectural judgement to keep solutions pragmatic and avoid unnecessary complexity
  • Identify database, performance and migration risks before they reach production
  • Deliver production-ready, observable and maintainable code
  • Lead substantive code reviews and identify genuine technical and design risks
  • Drive complex, multi-team technical projects from design through to delivery
  • Champion AI-assisted engineering and help build this capability across the team


What They're Looking For

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Clear evidence of operating at Staff Engineer level with cross-team technical impact
  • Strong experience leading significant platform-level technical work
  • Strong JVM background, particularly Java and Kotlin
  • Experience with Go or Node.js is beneficial
  • Hands-on full-stack experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React or Angular
  • Deep experience building and operating event-driven systems
  • Strong production experience with Kafka
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, including idempotency, delivery guarantees, backpressure, partitioning and schema evolution
  • Experience with CQRS and event sourcing, with the judgement to know when not to use them
  • Experience with API gateway technologies and patterns
  • Strong database knowledge across PostgreSQL and non-relational data stores
  • Experience with data modelling, query performance and database migrations under load
  • Proven ability to lead complex, multi-team technical initiatives
  • Strong experience using AI coding tools as part of your daily engineering workflow
  • Comfortable with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Cloud experience, ideally Azure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
