Job Description Engineering Manager Job Description The Engineering Manager is responsible for building, developing, and leading high-performing software engineering teams. This role provides people leadership, talent management, coaching, and organizational leadership while fostering an environment of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The Engineering Manager works closely with peer engineering managers, technical leaders, architects, product leaders, and business stakeholders to strengthen engineering culture, promote consistent engineering practices, and support successful business outcomes. Success in this role requires the ability to develop talent, unify teams across organizational boundaries, build strong partnerships, and create an environment where engineers can thrive and deliver their best work. Key Responsibilities People Leadership Lead, coach, and develop software engineers across multiple teams and varying experience levels. Foster a high-performance culture built on accountability, inclusion, continuous learning, and employee engagement. Support career development, mentoring, succession planning, and professional growth. Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to help engineers strengthen both technical and professional skills. Promote a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Talent Acquisition & Team Growth Lead hiring activities, candidate evaluation, interviewing, and onboarding. Build and grow strong engineering teams capable of supporting current and future business needs. Support workforce planning and long-term talent development efforts. Team Effectiveness & Organizational Leadership Foster collaboration across teams, products, and organizational boundaries. Help create a unified engineering organization by encouraging knowledge sharing, cross-training, and common engineering practices. Build strong partnerships with peer engineering managers and technical leaders to improve organizational effectiveness. Support organizational change and help teams successfully navigate evolving priorities and business needs. Strengthen communication, alignment, and collaboration across distributed teams. Technical Leadership Possess sufficient technical depth to effectively coach software engineers, understand technical challenges, and participate in engineering discussions. Partner effectively with architects, technical leads, and product leaders to support engineering excellence and successful delivery outcomes. Promote modern engineering practices, software quality, security, resiliency, and continuous improvement. Support teams through technology modernization, adoption of new tools and practices, and evolving engineering standards. Stakeholder Partnership Collaborate with engineering leaders, architects, product leaders, and business stakeholders. Facilitate communication across teams and help align organizational objectives. Support resolution of organizational, technical, and team-related challenges. Provide insights into team health, organizational effectiveness, and talent-development opportunities. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience. Six to eight years of relevant technical experience. Five or more years leading software engineering teams. Demonstrated success hiring, coaching, and developing engineers. Experience working within Agile software development environments. Preferred Skills & Experience Strong understanding of software engineering principles, development processes, and modern technology practices. Demonstrated ability to build, develop, and scale high-performing teams. Strong coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills. Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries. Experience leading geographically distributed teams. Experience supporting modernization, engineering transformation, or technology adoption initiatives. Familiarity with modern software engineering environments utilizing technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, React, APIs, cloud platforms, container technologies, relational databases, and CI/CD practices. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical, planning, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to unify teams around shared goals, practices, and engineering culture.
