QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • A Professional Law Degree and membership in the Law Society of BC
  • At least five years’ current experience related experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the proven ability to manage conflict situations effectively
  • Strong organizational skills, with a proven ability to meet deadlines in a multiple task environment
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage law office technology to increase productivity

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.

Responsibilities

Providing legal advice to City departments and related Boards and handling a broad range of matters, including:

  • Preparation and negotiation of:
  • Various legal agreements for real estate development projects, where the City is acting in a regulatory capacity through the rezoning, subdivision and development permit processes and/or as property owner in the construction of housing, civic facilities and infrastructure
  • Ground leases, leases and license agreements
  • Development management and construction agreements to increase the supply of affordable market and non-market housing and other City amenities
  • Review of mortgage and finance-related documents
  • Preparation of air space subdivisions for mixed-use projects
  • Purchase and sale of City landsReal estate development and municipal law issues, including opinions on City by-laws and provincial legislation
