IRON GATE is looking for hospitality focused Sommelier/Server to join the team!
Iron Gate, a D.C. institution, is looking for individuals with a passion for food, wine, and hospitality. Our team members are currenlty make $30-50/hr, and benefits are available for full-time employees. We also offer many opportunities for advancement as we are one of the few restaurant groups actually growing these days! Experience is important, but we are most interested in hiring the right people!
Chef Antony Chittum features his ever-changing menu with Greek and Italian influences, sourcing from local purveyors wherever possible. Everything is made from scratch using only the best ingredients and features wood and charcoal cooking. Animals are butchered whole in house, seafood is sustainably sourced and there is a strong focus on supporting small local farms.
Iron Gate has been a continual recipient of awards and accolades in its ten years in Dupont Circle. The restaurant has been featured in The Michelin Guide, Washingtonian Magazine’s “100 Very Best Restaurants,” and Washington Post critic Tom Sietsema says “Count me pleased” with a three star review at Chef Tony’s Italian and Greek inspired menu.

We are looking for a trained Sommelier to manage the extensive Italian and Greek wine program at Iron Gate. Responsibilities include:

  • Selling Mediterranean food and beverage to Iron Gate guests
  • Managing the inventory and listings of the wine menu
  • Learning and retaining information about pertinent producers and labels
  • Assisting in team training on the wine selections
  • Communicating with the Wine Director on needs and trends in the restaurant
  • Managing the daily upkeep of the wine inventory
  • Assisting in the selection of wines for private events
  • Selecting wines for tasting menu pairings
  • Hosting winemakers and industry partners at wine dinners and tastings

Requirements:

  • A strong knowledge of Mediterranean wines and an enthusiasm for learning more about an evolving wine industry!
  • Certification from one of the following organizations preferred: Court of Master Sommeliers, The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, or The Society of Wine Educators
  • Experience in a fine dining restaurant strongly preferred
  • Ability to use Excel Spreadsheets and Google Drive
  • A strong understanding of the importance of communication and teamwork
  • Close attention to detail
