Description:

We are a close team of permanent sonographers with the majority undertaking obstetrics, gynaecology and general medicine examinations. We encourage role extension, have quarterly education sessions, clinical meetings and support the ethos that ultrasound is a career embedded in lifelong learning. Our womens unit provides care for our Obstetric and Gynaecology patients. We have 4 ultrasound rooms within the main department and a shared reporting area where support and opinions can be given and shared.
We also have scan rooms in the early pregnancy unit and the ante-natal clinic. This is where you would be working if you have a PgC qualification. If you have a PgD qualification you would also undertake general medicine examinations as part of your remit. The general medicine examinations are undertaken in the X-Ray department where we have 6 ultrasound rooms in which we both scan and report.
This department is where we undertake general medicine, head and neck, MSK and vascular DVT examinations. We also undertake infant hip and neonatal cranial ultrasound examinations within the paediatric setting. Main Duties and Responsibilities Qualified to provide a diagnostic reporting service to referring Clinicians Communications Communicate effectively with patients and carers to support and empower them. To develop good communications with all disciplines of staff both internally and external to the Directorate.
Responsibility for Patient Care To ensure a high quality patient focussed professional service is delivered at all times To provide an integrated Ultrasound service to hospital clinicians, GPs and Midwives. To perform a range of Ultrasound examinations on all groups of patients within your remit to the recognised standard. To issue diagnostic reports based on Ultrasound findings to referring clinicians in order to contribute to timely patient management. To offer support/counselling as appropriate in the event of breaking bad news.
To be responsible for and ensure the care and comfort of the patient whilst in the Department and during the examination To ensure all work areas are kept tidy at all times. To maintain professionally high standards in appearance, hygiene, manner, punctuality, attendance and competence. Responsibility for Policy and Service Development and Implementation To work to agreed Clinical protocols in any of the Ultrasound Departments within the Directorate. To maintain a high standard of work at all times and adhere to the Directorate Quality Standards Document.
Responsibilities for Human Resources and Leadership To supervise the Radiographer Helpers who assist in the Ultrasound areas To participate in the induction of new staff into the Department and support the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. To be aware of the responsibilities for safety of him/herself, patients and others in accordance with fire, health and safety and COSHH regulations to ensure that safe working practices are carried out at all times. To participate in the staff appraisal system and agree your personal and professional development plan with your line manager. Responsibilities for Teaching and Training To participate in the training of specialist Registrars in Radiology/Obstetrics and other non-medical professionals in Ultrasound techniques and use of equipment To participate in the induction of new staff into the Department and support the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
Responsibilities for data and information resources To be responsible for and ensure that Clinical and other information records are fully and accurately completed in a timely manner. Research, Development and Audit To show evidence of continuing professional development. Attend MDT Meetings relevant to your specialist interest on a regular basis. To keep up to date with current imaging technical developments, professional and Trust issues.
General Duties As a member of a clinical team your personal contribution to reducing healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) require you to be familiar with the Trusts Hand Decontamination Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, safe procedures for using aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps. You are required to attend mandatory training in Infection Prevention & Control and be compliant with all measures known to be effective in reducing HCAIs Observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures To maintain confidentiality and abide by the Data Protection Act To be familiar with and follow health and safety policy and procedures and to be aware of individual responsibilities under legislation, drawing any areas of potential risk to the attention of Managers To undertake any other duties which is deemed appropriate to the band when requested by Senior Staff The above indicates the main duties of the post which may be reviewed in the light of experience and development within the service. They must not for their own benefit or gain, or to divulge to any persons, firm or other organisation whatsoever, any confidential information belonging to the Trust or relating to the Trusts affairs or dealings which may come to their knowledge during employment.
